Now, if you can't afford to have the car out of service, or just don't enjoy driving the car anymore, that's a different story, but the economics usually favor repairing an old car vs. buying a new one. That said, I will probably do some mods in a couple of years -- suspension and tune -- just to keep it fresh. |

Good point; there will be a diff pov between buyers & leasers. Bought my 1 MSport out right w/ 2yrs left of warranty & plan to renew it after. It's my dream car so I'm thinking long-term here. I'll find out how well it holds up over the years. Still kinda giddy about my new whip

Owning your car outright and knowing no one can take it away from you because you didn't make payments, or that no one can charge you for driving it too many miles is an understated joy of driving any car. Trading up and always chasing the best or newest will make it hard to do that, at least for me.
This car may not be a collectible but it is still a rare breed amongst modern cars. Its a small car with RWD, near 50/50 weight balance and an inline-six (in some cases with two turbos) that costs less than the 3 series but delivers all if not more of the fun. Mine is a 6MT SGM which makes it all the more rare. Sure, there are other cars that do one or two things better but none that do nearly all things well. It doesn't sound like BMW is going to continue this kind of tradition for very much longer so I will hang onto my car just in case they don't. And I'm certainly not going to rush off to sell it and take the massive depreciation that this car has wrought upon me. Just because its not going to be on some collector's list doesn't mean it isn't a collector's item to me. Now if the 1M is reliable or this car turns out to cost more to maintain than buy a new car (doubt it) then I'll change my mind. But as someone said earlier (paraphrasing here) I don't see spending two or three payments on repairs every year or two as worse than dumping more money on a new car. |

Most people just want something different every 2-3 years...especially "car guys" who like lots of different cars but can only afford (or justify) owning one at a time. I'm not even 30 yet but I've played my share of musical cars already...selling or trading in every year or so and doing it all over again just out of boredom. Lots of the guys I hang out with are the same way so that doesn't help either.
I just picked up my 135i about a month ago after not having a car at all for almost a year and am quite happy with the deal I got and the car itself, having been interested since they came out, so I doubt I'll have much trouble being happy driving it for at least a couple years. An E92 M3 might be in the cards at some point, but I know it would be hard to find the perfect used one if I ever get serious about doing that, as most people just aren't as careful or fickle with their cars as I am. |

I'm sure a lot of guys here are leasing their cars, as others have stated... It's fine with me, because it allowed me to buy the car at a much reduced price with CPO warranty .

I'd only go n55 to get the DCT.
I'm sure they'll have the n55 tuning well worked out in a year when it's time to upgrade.

I'll drive this car for as long as it lasts.
Even after its time to get a new one, if it's still running- it'll become a weekend warrior for me, if I have a choice, it will stay with me forever. I'm not expecting it to become a collectable, however I agree this small coupe turbo platform is unique, and provides enough pleasure for me to keep as a weekend car (especially since I can't afford a porsche or lotus) |

Have you looked at used E30 M3 prices these days? Since they bottomed out 10 years ago, their prices has risen and now stock/good quality models are being sold in 20's. And there was only 5000 brought into the US. This is definitely becoming a collector's car.

[QUOTE=KingOfJericho;7657128]People get bored easily./QUOTE]
Yup. Unless it's a "special" car i get bored within 6-12 months. Only kept my GTI for 6 months b4 i gave it to my mom. The car that kept me happy the longest (3 years) was my s2000, but it was modded heavily & ill never sell that car. Thats why I'm getting the 1M now. I think it'll be another car that will keep me satisfied for a long time. |

I have driven several BMWs for more than 100,000 miles. None needed major repairs. The only problems; brakes, exhaust, oil leaks, radiator, water pump, thermostat, and and a number of smaller failures, I was able to fix myself.
I kept my new E36 for 16 years. That was a bit long, and it was looking shabby. I will probably keep the 128i for about 10 years, and it will only have about 50,000 miles on it by then. Someone will get a nice car when I trade it in.

The only trade in for me would be a 2012 1M so right now that looks unlikely.
Plan B is time to do the BMW upgrades which I expect will make Baby seem like new again after 3 years and good for several more.
