n55, ticking lifter?

Hi there, I've got a n55 with 22k miles on it. I started it today 3 times when cold.. this morning, at lunch, and after work. all three times, I have the sound of a sticky/leaking lifter, that quickly went away (a few seconds).

I check my oil level (electronically), and it read "ok"

Has anyone else had this on a n55 or 54 for that matter?

Thanks!

I hear the tappet/lifter tick sound every morning but only on the first start of the day. Not certain if that's what the sound is. At this point. I'm not too concerned since it goes away, unlike my 328 (N52). I believe the sound on the N52 was due to lack of oil in the tappet/lifter at start up...the design was not very good as it allowed all of the oil to drain when sitting idle overnight. Once oil pressure built up to a certain level the sound goes away; the problem with that is one would have to drive at near hwy speeds to get to that point. I would also like to hear what others have to say since I am not too concerned at this point.

Ken that's the same sound I'm talking about. Lifter tick, and yes only for a few seconds, but it shouldn't happen at all, ya know.

Don't worry, it is not your lifters. It is actually the fuel injectors. Direct injection is extremely noisy.

^- I was just about to write that. My money is on typical DI noise rather than lifters.

+2. When i change my spark plugs I started the engine with the plastic valve cover(& foam) off the engine. MAN!!! I was shocked at how much louder the engine was!

Btw OP... how often do you change your oil? I am just curious. This is one more reason why I do frequent oil changes. But I still say the ticking sound you are hearing is the Direct Injection.

Thanks guys...b/c that tappet/lifter issue with the N52 drove me nuts. Plus, the SA and BMW were in denial and it's not easy to explain engineering (hydraulic valve adjusters, camlobes, & tappets) to someone who does not give a crap, even though they had issued a few TSBs. I didnt think it applied to the N54. Changing my oil every 7500 mi.

So if it was just DI, why would it just start happening lately, and only on start up for a few seconds?
