Please, at least once make the drive from Bormio up to Stelvio; that one is SO much MORE fun than the actual 48-turn Stelvio itself if you ask me. We drove it twice around 1800 hrs.... low traffic, good weather and a few Akra's flying by...... I have a video of our group of 5 driving it (4x 1M, 1x 135) but it's huge (about 5,5GB)

Also the gavia pass was nice, but very narrow

When abouts will you guys be in Stelvio? Do you already have a hotel? Francesca's Alt Post hotel in Trafoi was quite nice and was very cheap. 55 euros pp including dinner and breakfast. She even closed off her parking lot in front of the hotel for all of us. PM me for her contact info. The hotel is literally at the base of the Stelvio Pass.

Alt Post Hotel

I wanted to do this before but never got to it:

Day 1 (small group):
Bormio up to Stelvio was THE BEST . Nauders to Zernez is nice but there was more traffic and a lot of roadwork. If there were no roadworks it would've been a really nice drive to, now we had to stop for something like 5 times for traffic lights and then we were stuck behind traffic .
https://maps.google.nl/maps?saddr=Re...&sz=10&t=m&z=9

Day 1 (big group): *i think*
The connection road from ths SS41 to the top of Stelvio is actually a dirt road.
https://maps.google.nl/maps?saddr=Re...2&sz=9&t=m&z=9

Day 2:
Stelvio to Merano is boring with a lot of traffic.
Merano to Revo is really nice, fun roads. There was almost no traffic when we drove it, around 1400 it was i think.
The road to Ponte di Lego is again boring with a lot of traffic.
Then the Gavia pass ohh man, I was glad we had radio's and an Autrian guy up front we drove in bad weather, it was foggy, rainy and there was even some rumbling and lightning going on. And remember, if you run into traffic: somebody is going to have to back-up
https://maps.google.nl/maps?saddr=Pa...sz=11&t=m&z=10

Day 3:
Borring road again to Merano.
Timmelsjoch that was really fun.
From Solden down was nice but not really special.

YuP! I was thinking about that this last weekend, while I was driving thru Switzerland - driving some more Alpine Passes. Let me know the next time you come this way.

You know where ever we all drove(together in a convoy)... people would first spot one of our 1M's, then another one.... AND THEN they would all POINT to Rudi's blue smurf 1M... and he was the hit of our convoy. Everyone just LOVES the color of his car. Including me!

+1 ...especially if the convoy driving at 70 km/h on a long downhill part is passed by a cyclist who's tired of life, riding downhill like a boss (merely standing on the bicycle pedals for minutes).

Here it is: leaving "Flies Valley" for the final Stelvio approach from the Bormio side, followed by a Stelvio downhill run (uh, trailing behind a van) with rain drops gently starting to trickle down:
  • 03:34-05:18: a fine sequence of tunnels (the flatbed truck leaving the first tunnel carries a 911 Turbo)
  • from 09:40 onwards: "The Long And Winding Road..."
  • 21:13-21:15 + 24:32-24:36: hear the thunder rumbling in the Stelvio valley, just to add some drama to the experience.

Have a blast and take care !

If you get the chance to squeeze the Silvretta Pass into your schedule, then go for it. It ranges amongst the very best Alpine roads. Sweetly winding with a bonus at the summit: the lake. And it's a toll road, so it's pretty calm compared to many other passes (cows might watch you whilst passing by - moooo...).

WoW! That looks awesome but thats a bit of a hike! I thought some of our guys were nuts for climbing up the mountain! Looks like that "hut" is at the top of Stelvio where all the shops and big parking lot is at. Its gonna be dead quiet at night there. Looks amazing.

You guys should stop by Francesca's place for a coffee break. She makes a mean cup of espresso!!

Its a wrap job. It is a color very close to Santorini Blue.

Whats really cool is its so green and lush here in Germany/Austria/Swiss that Rudi's blue 1M really "pops" out in the wild. You should PM Rudi for more info on the wrap though: gs/e60/1m?
