Just thought I'd share this link to these AWESOME Alpine Road books. Be sure to click on all three videos. I have the #3 book and can vouch for it. And you don't need to know any German bc the pics and the paper quality of this book is just super. I ordered mine from Amazon.de

Dackel's #3 copy passed through my hands during the Stelvio trip: amazing pictures, a fancy artefact.

Anyone "game" for an impromptu run up to the Alps before winter sets in. ?

I am thinking of another road trip to Switzerland in the next few weeks. Thoughts?

You're an alpine aficionado.

Keep an eye on the alpine roads info (open/closed passes):
http://www.alpen-journal.de/alpenser...penpaesse.html
http://www.alpenpaesse.co/
http://www.alpineroads.com/passstatus.php
http://www.oeamtc.at/?id=2500,,,1934
http://www.provincia.bz.it/verkehr/default.asp
Dropdown menu: "Typologie": "Aktuelle Lage" [Current Location] - "Berg- und Passstrassen" [Mountain and Passes] - "Radarkontrollen" [Speed Control] - "Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel" [Public Transport] - "Ausserhalb Tirol" [Outside Tirol] - "Baustellen" [Road works])
So for the current status of mountain passes, select "Berg- und Passstrassen" ("Wintersperre" = closed because of Winter)
In "Zeitraum" [Time Frame] choose your date of preference

The 2013 Swiss motorway vignette is still valid until 31 January 2014 (http://www.ezv.admin.ch/zollinfo_pri...x.html?lang=en). The Austrian 10 day vignette expired already.

Luc /Rudi /Wade,

Could you guys tell me what your Stelvio pre-run looked like? If i remember correctly it was somewhere near Basel right? I'm heading down there for business in the coming weeks and i'm thinking of taking a couple of days off to drive the route you guys drove

Hi Sjors, Do you have a specific date that you will be down there? I would LOVE to have another little get together down in the Alps. Maybe we could meet up?

Btw... I heard on the German radio reports that tonight above 1,500 meters there will be snow in the Alps.

First Stelvio pre-run day (leaving from Belgium)
  • Wittlich
  • The Black Forest (lots of winding roads)
  • hotel stay at Göschenen (Switzerland)
Second Stelvio pre-run day (leaving from Göschenen)
  • Furka Pass
  • Nufenen Pass (Passo della Novena)
  • (ancient) St. Gotthard Pass (Passo del San Gottardo) (cobble stones & cows)
  • a pass where it suddenly started to fog and rain like hell (Susten? Klausen?)
  • Silvretta Pass (the cherry on the cake - toll road, so very calm)
  • hotel stay at Stelvio (Italy)
Rudi and Wade might chime in to specify the details and chronology.

Fond memories of this "Three Musketeers" pre-run. We had a blast.

And yes, hills of the Black Forest can cause a 135i with an aggressive tune to go into limp mode for half an hour or so...

Yes it will be because it will be an extension of my business trip but it's not fixed yet, it depends on my supplier. I hope it's in the coming three weeks, will keep you posted!

I envy you, all we get is lousy rain.

Tnx Luc, I got this route from Rudi:
http://goo.gl/maps/dGiZx

I'm particularly interested in the Schonau im Schwarzwald area. I recall Wade making a comment "that next time we need to get a hotel there, make it the start and end point and cover the whole area around - North - East - South - West". I'm looking for the 'Todtnau - Todtmoos - Wehr' routes

If I type in a couple of passes, the Stelvio pre-run road might roughly have been a bit like this (including the Friday eve trip to Nauders where we arrived a few minutes ahead of the cavalry, before thunder, lightning and rain accompanied us all to the final leg to Stelvio/Trafoi hotel ):

https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=U...=3,4,5,6,7&z=9

Nufenen Pass (Passo della Novena):

(*): it seems that the Silvretta Hochalpenstraße was overlooked in the list of Austrian mountain passes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silvretta_Alps)

OHHH YES it is!! Actually @Artemis and I will be doing a little Alpine "research" this weekend. We are still in the planning stages... we won't be driving Stelvio again, bc most of the guys feel it's kind of boring now we have done it twice. So Artemis and I will be driving around the Dolomites scouting out some cool Alpine Passes to drive.

This year's 1Addicts Alpine Pass tour will be in either late June or July time frame. I will make a new thread when I know more where and when we will hold our summertime Alpine Pass tour.
