135i fuel consumption wars
Just thought I'd revive the fuel consumption talk on the 135i for the Aussies/Kiwis.
Whats your average? And where is most if your driving - highway or residential Right now I'm averaging 12.7L/100km Mixed driving, More residential than highway Also, do you try to conserve fuel? What tactics do you use? I slip into neutral down hills (though I've found this to be dangerous lol as sometimes the gear won't go back into Drive unless I have my foot on the brakes) And sometimes at traffic lights i switch off the car ~ though I'm not sure if stop-starts have any adverse effects on the engine |

It actually uses less fuel to coast down hills in gear than neutral, since no fuel is injected into the engine when the car can move without power. In neutral, fuel must be injected to maintain idle speed. You can try this, in neutral the fuel consumption metre will show a reading, while in gear it'll show a reading of 0.0L/100km. Not to mention it's a lot safer to have the engine engaged to the wheels. Especially considering your car's an auto and can't be easily slipped back into drive. I definitely try my best to conserve fuel while I'm not gunning for it, shifting below 2000rpm (except sometimes for 1st gear) and making sure I'm always in the highest gear possible. By 60kph, I'm usually coasting in 6th already. Other than that, I use light throttle applications to get myself moving and try my best to time it so I never come to a complete stop. But then I forget everything when a done up Civic revs his engine next to me at a red light. Throttle = mashed to firewall.

Let alone the safety aspect of coasting in neutral You've posted a question that cannot be answered definitively, as each driver will have different combinations of city/highway driving and how they apply their right foot to the accelerator. Starting the car can use more fuel at reignition. If you crave an answer, the best you can do is drive conservatively, PULP and let your auto-magic gearbox do the work for you. Other than that... |

hahah nicely put
yeah I realised that lately, down hills in drive it says 0 but in neutral its about 3/4, so I suppose I'll stop doing that, mind you, in neutral the vehicle rolls faster hahaha start/stop at lights seems to be a bad idea also, wear out the starter 10.9 is pretty good, most residential areas i drive around are just filled with up down hills, and up hills the fuel consumptions always on like 30+ litres/100km.. soo yea |

Mix drive - 10.0L/100km
Shift according to dash board - and skip shifts up. Heel-toe in every opportunity. Engaged cruise control over 80km/h. BTW - that's what I do, but not necessary what saves fuel. Wife's 125i - 10.1L/100km Same piece of road - Automatic. Never use cruise control and could never hold her right foot still - constant acceleration and deceleration around the required speed, putting her foot down everytime she goes from a stop.

10.0 for me. 135i auto.
Mostly residential, some highway and occasionally city. I basically change gears as soon as I can, but with the cooler weather and the sound of the intake I have had a tendancy to have a heavier foot and haven't increased consumption much. |

I'm averaging 10.5, mixed city and freeway. I use cruise whenever possible, skip gears, use 5th gear at 60+ and 6th gear when 80+. Except when I feel the need for a decent thrashing With 6 speeds and such a flexible engine, I'm surprised BMW didn't make 6th gear a proper overdrive - like it is in HSVs with 100kph = ~1500rpm...? |

With 15,000km on the clock of my manual 135i Coupe, I'm averaging 10.9L/100km with a best of 9.0L/100km (freeway drive to Cooma) and worst of 13.6L/100km (included 2 hours of cross-town Sydney gridlock). I don't "hypermile" - what's the point with a performance car like this? However, when cruising around, I do the usual things like selecting the highest possible gear (to maintain ~1500-2000rpm), skipping gears (1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th are favourites), and coasting downhill in gear (usually 4th). Most of my driving is around Wollongong using the F6 freeway, or weekend trips on country backroads and highways. I also live near the bottom of Macquarie Pass, which is not a road conducive to fuel economy.

21,000km driven to date, also manual 135i convertible (JB3 Map7)..Mainly city driving av 11.8L/100km..(Med to hard driving)
Round trip to Wagga Wagga two weeks ago, driven around 950km's and averaged 8.2L/100km. Not bad considering the vert is 120kg heavier than the coupe. |

I'm somewhere between 10.5-11.0, and that's with a mix of highway and residential driving.

Interesting setup. I don't know too many people just running custom midpipes, most people tend to change their axel back section first. Is there any drone with this? Sounds pretty tough

As someone else said, what's the point of getting a performance car if you're going to be a fuel miser. I average about 11.4-11.8L/100km every tank. If i feel like shooting off from the lights, i shoot off. And I almost always feel like shooting off
I love 2nd gear, the pull through to 5K is glorious (without belting it to redline), same with 3rd. I bought the car to drive the car. I don't buy a 300HP car and drive it like a Barina. Of course, this means that I usually hit the speed limit very, very quickly and then just let my foot off the throttle and save some fuel coasting along in top gear using 0.0L/100 on my instantaneous fuel read out. To counter my lead footedness, i do leave it in a high gear when coming to the lights/stop and let it coast in gear. Though if it's only a corner, then i'm blipping the throttle whilst down gearing ready to shoot out the other side. I just love driving my car. Fuel be damned.

I have a manual and am averaging around 12.4 around town but usually do fairly short trips. Sparoz...10 mixed is legendary with a manual! I have never been able to keep the average that low unless I spend a lot of time on the highway.

this is the biggest gripe i have with my manual 135i
i absolutely love it... but the fuel tank is too small... and i am unable to get the consumption under 12.3 average... i do a lot of short trips to and from the city though which is very hilly and a fair bit of highway driving to and from my fiancee's place. if you guys are getting sub 12km/l you must be driving like miss daisy... cuz i know i am and still only getting 12, always using PULP! i'll have to try skipping a few gears more often though... anyone in brissy sub 12km/l? |
