New 2014 BMW CPO Rules

I'm in the market for a used 1 series and while browsing the BMW site I stumbled upon a blurb stating as of 1/1/14 CPO warranties are no long transferable to subsequent owners. Anyone else hear of this? I was about test drive a CPO 135i tonight, this has me seriously reconsidering..

Is this 135 at a BMW dealer? If so, you are still good.

It does look like a ploy on BMW's part to get a "piece of the pie."

You could check out a third-party warranty. I can't recommend a particular company, though. Never been down that road....

Interesting. That would have screwed me when purchasing the X5 I currently own as I bought it as a CPO from an Audi dealership. Good to know.

I thought CPO's always had to be bought at a BMW dealer. Else the 'certified' was branded by some 3rd party company that Joe Smith dealer uses but BMW would not address any issues unless the car was still covered under the original manufacturers warranty.

I haven't looked into it, but I assumed it was like the manufacturer's 4yr/50k mile warranty and is linked to the VIN and the car is then CPO until that warranty runs out.

*This is a guess from when I was looking for cars. People state CPO on their cars like it goes with it, and also dealers other than BMW sell them as CPO like it goes with the car

This was/is my understanding as well. I think this "new" 2014 rule can be interpreted as the CPO'd portion of the car's warranty will no longer be transferred to subsequent buyers unless the CPO'd car is purchased from a BMW dealership.

I bought my X5 from an Audi dealership in Houston. It was not advertised as CPO on their Web site, but when running the Carfax is clearly showed it had been CPOd by BMW. I called BMW just to make sure, and they confirmed. Then once I purchased the BMW and took it in for service, I had the gentleman in the service department verify it again (I'm a bit paranoid if you can tell) and he wrote down the dates for me when the CPO would expire.

Very interesting.

Question - does this rule apply retroactively to cars that have already been CPO'd and purchased prior to Jan 1 2014, or only to cars CPO'd Jan 1 2014 and forward?

For example:

1. 2009 e82 purchased CPO from dealership in 2011. CPO warranty expires 2015 (4 years original warranty plus 2 years CPO extended). The car was thus "CPO'd" in 2011
2. 2012 car is sold by 2nd owner (person who purchased it as CPO) to the 3rd owner via private party. Car is still CPO per BMW.
3. 2014 car is sold by 3rd owner to 4th owner. Is the car still CPO? Does BMW automatically terminate the warranty?

In the scenario above, the 3rd owner is getting screwed royally if the CPO is cancelled. Reason being, the 3rd owner purchased the car as a CPO and paid a premium thinking they could one day resell the car (if necessary) at a premium.

In this situation, I am the 3rd owner. I don't think I'll sell the car before the CPO warranty is up (or even after), but I know I was willing to pay the premium when buying the car not only because I was getting the CPO warranty, but also knowing that the CPO warranty follows the car (and not the owner). For BMW to suddenly change the rules really changes the way I valued the CPO warranty on the car.
