Engine problem

Just wondering if anyone has had similar to this: On quite a fast drive today while accelerating near the red line in 3rd gear the car started to misfire and the engine fault light came on yellow (the book says this indicates an engine fault with adverse effect on emissions). The car continued to misfire (as if running on less than 6 cylinders) until switched off. When restarted it ran normally until five minutes later when exactly the same happened again under similar circumstances. Again, when switched off it returned to normal.

The car has never done this in the three years I have had it. It is now on 57,000 miles and was serviced 1000 miles ago (last month). I'm pleased to say I've taken out BMW extended warranty so will be booking it in.

Any ideas folks? Many thanks.

Sounds like the dreaded high pressure fuel pump issue.

First step is to read for thrown codes(ECL). It could be anything.

Btw... how old are your spark plugs? They should have been changed at 45K miles. Every ~25K miles if you are running a tune. Thats my guess... you were running lots of load in third gear(and boost) and a plug or two got its flame(spark) put out causing a ECL. Just a guess.

The plugs were changed 1000 miles ago at the last service. What is an ECL? Interestingly Check Control on idrive revealed no faults.

Would consider an intake valve cleaning.

I think he means Engine Check Light. I always think HPFP when my car has issues, but that's because I've had my 135 since back when the HPFP was the issue.
