Ice Racing!!
So Roldan and I are thinking about doing some ice racing in the 1ers. Anyone else interested? :roundel:
Ice Races are designed to be safe, low-pressure events in which all participants have fun! The primary goal of Ice Racing is to develop drivers who can successfully control their vehicles in adverse driving conditions with consistency. Consistency requires that winter driving techniques become natural reactions, which carry over in safer driving on icy, wet, and even dry roads. These natural reactions develop through using the least amount of input for the desired response and doing it smoothly, becoming aware of the car's individual qualities and handling, and by spending time on the ice practicing car control. As we are striving for consistency, we average scores when it is reasonable to do so.

I was thinking about it as well, but I am not sure if I can motivate myself to drive 2 hours each way to hang out in the freezing cold weather...
That being said, I am leaning towards trying it once. Keep us posted on whether you do it, and definitely post pictures. Maybe the relative lack of power of the 128i would be an advantage in ice racing...

They don't have exact dates scheduled yet.. it basically all depends on the ice.

I've been Ice racing with the Boston chapter BMWCCA for 14 years now and it can be a tun of fun. conditions very from glare ice to slush to a nice crunchy crust of snow on the ice that can make for a pretty high speed event. it makes for a long day but will definitely help you with your car control. any way it can be rather fun.
I'll definitely be attending but unfortunately my 1er is put away for the winter. I'll have my 540i wagon. |

It is probably good considering the high for Sunday is forecast to be 16F with a low of -4F... I think I would have had to pass on that one anyway.

As of last week when they canceled it, they were planning on this Sunday, February 1st. I'll keep ya posted when I get updates!

Stan "the ice man" really tries to have as many events as he possibly can, but conditions change form day to day, and not only are they concerned with thickness of the ice, but also conditions getting on and off of the ice. It can also get really choppy, which can tear tires to pieces. So, they only go when it's good conditions.
They have the patience of saints though. Since I chair the autocross series, I know what it's like to prepare for events. They have to prepare for events every weekend, and hope it works out. |

I was thinking of driving up from nyc to give this a try, but was going to take my dad's X5 instead of the 135. Any of you guys use a similarly heavy vehicle for this before? What did you think if so?

You'll have a blast. Don't worry about the weight on the ice. If the chapter's autocross van can get on the ice with a ton of cones and equipment in it, no problemo with the X5. You'll have a blast.
Check out some of the ice racing movies from an event from last year. |

The side mount camera video is great!!! You really get a nice view seeing his wheels and the cars angle nicely.
Do you guys have a feel on how much warning they have if an event will go on? It's a 5 1/2 hour drive for me so I do need to plan a little a head of time if possible.

Stan sends out emails as he knows things. I've seen events get both confirmed or canceled up to a few days before the event. Since it is so "conditions based" it's hard for them to guarantee an event will be occurring definitively.
5.5 hrs away? Yikes! I have a hard time justifying my 3.5 hr drive up there. They do put on a premier event though. Top notch. Btw, that driver in the e30 is Mike Tosi, and was 17 at the time of that video. His dad owns a Porsche shop, and he's a great driver, regardless of age. |
