Would this work with other 7 inch tablets? I just ordered this one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...technical-data

Also, where does the other end of the cable come out of? (assuming one end is permanently plugged into the tablet)

Sounds exciting!

I'd love to see a DIY thread or some sort of writeup, once you get everything sorted! No pressure though

I could, but ba114 deserves all the credit behind this project, as he has walked me through this step by step!

Massive thank you to Murray!

Nice! I ordered one from the US using a German remailer.

Hopefully it should be here soon. Are you guys using the 2013 Nexus 7?

This would also be useful for MHD flashing and changing maps...

Nexus 7 2012/2013 is the best choice as there are kernels available that enable fast charge (higher amp) whilst using the OTG connection. Most tablets don't have this support and have much less developer interest in building the kernel code to enable it.

The other option is a cheaper (chinese) tablet that has an additional DC-in jack. These typically take a 2A charger input via a DC jack in addition to having a USB-OTG port.

You ideally will need one of these options to ensure your tablet can maintain charge when in use.

I also cannot stress enough, the importance of using a proper power source. Standard cigarette lighter plugs, while advertised up to around 2.1A never seem to put out that power. i personally use a device similar to this:

I ordered mine from Germany also and had it forwarded from the UK

I am using Nexus 7 2013 with Timurs USBROM which you need to pay $19EU iirc

Otherwise I have a Nexus 7 2012 running Autodroid which is free.

I couldn't get MHD to connect with my setup. I have the OTG cable connected to the tablet, then an extension cord running down to the glovebox for power and a USB female to female adapter to connect to the OBD cable.

Good luck with the install!

Trickiest part for me - no storage bin on the dash.

I actually have to cut a hole...

Perhaps you'd be willing to part ways with one of the housings? I've been dying to find one with no luck at all :-(

I'll definitely have a look there. What is the piece called? To me it's just the navigation/screen housing but every time I search and ask for the piece nobody seems to know what I'm talking about

I cut the hole. It wasn't really that hard, just intimidating.

I made my own template, by first cutting a hole for the housing to install through out of cardboard, then traced around the outside so I had an exact copy of it's profile. Was much easier then using the template you can find online.
