People being afraid of driving a car that's at most eight years old long distances baffle me a bit. Most cars I've owned have been older than that. Moved across the country in a 14-year old V70 last year, 2500 miles, no fucks given.
Just do your maintenance and understand your vehicle. I can't believe people with four year old cars are seriously in here mentioning trips under 100 miles. My 1er is nearly new with only 9950mi on the clock, but I'd happily put another 9950 on it any time given the opportunity for a badass roadtrip. SF to Anchorage to Miami to SF? |

drove from rhode island to arizona last august then back in may. 150 miles into the trip back to RI the water pump failed and we luckily were able to get it fixed the same day (thanks tino at import automotive in flagstaff) my n55 engine only had 47k miles when the water pump failed so if possible do some advanced maintence on anything that may go in the relatively near future. besides that all was good

08 128i w/52k on it. Read lots of posts, so i preemptively replaced the water pump, tstat and related hoses prior. Drove Seattle to LA to bimmerfest and put on 3000 miles. Ran some fabulous backroads for a whole day in Northern california with a group of cars at a very fast pace. Only issue is a CEL that popped up twice on the drive. But never stranded. The N52 is a great motor (DISA+Tune) and a good successor to the S52

Last year, went from Boise, ID to Zion Natl Park, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Death Valley, then back to Boise. Over 2200 miles, much of it at 70 - 80 mph, temps from the 40's to close to 100. No problems at all. It's a 2008 135i, had about 30k miles on it at the time.

Drove mine from Pensacola, FL back home to Chicago when I bought her 1 year ago. About 900 miles. Next week taking her on a trip with friends to Nashville then to the Tail of the Dragon. Not as far but still a drive!

Did about 1500 miles from Thursday Morning to Monday Night this memorial day weekend. Los Angeles to Salt Lake City, back to Los Angeles, and then 250+ miles of canyons on Monday.

Seriously if you do regular maintenance any car is reliable.... In 2008-2010 took a 2 year roadtrip when i was younger and maybe foolish in a '99 saab 9-3 with stage 3 mods and tune. After 20k miles on a car that started with 113k miles turbo failed and caused an exhaust valve to crack off a triangle on a chunk of compressor fin it spit into the intake. I disabled the injector to the cylinder left the spark plug out. Drove almost 400 miles (leaving an oil smoke screen from blown turbo) to a junkyard with a 50k mile wreck i could use. $700ish later in the junk yard parking lot i had swapped the engine and turbo with a hoist i rented. Then later while at the grand canyon same car. Trans mount failed allowed enough twist on the engine to snap the shift linkage. Soo made friends bought the parts i needed on ebay had them shipped to the friends adress. If i had the chance i would do it again... if you live in fear you never experience the world around you. We put around 38k miles on that 2 year road trip. Went to all the national parks. Camped in all of them sometimes for a whole month to explore it.

I drive a few hpde's a year plus a few trips back and forth from NYC to Ohio with no hesitation. I plan to drive Mid-Ohio from NYC and back in a weekend and repeat the same with VIR in October. No big deal... regular maintenance etc. works, this isn't 1960 when cars were cool, but sketchy. I'm in a 2012 135i stock, but also props to whoever is running 500hp dd!!
BTW I also park the streets of NYC daily... this is more stressful than anything else. |

Flew to Charlotte yesterday to bring my E88 135 (with Dinan S3) to Sarasota. 650 mi with absolutely complete confidence in it. Was able to keep up with the high rider pickups with enough reserve to get around the really fast Ford Focuses that camp out in left lane. Not nearly the miles others on here have covered, but like them, my 1er showed nothing but reliability. |

So, I got halfway across the country just fine. Driving around in my new town tonight and I throw a SES light.
Well, I guess I get to meet my new dealer and SA sooner than I thought I was going to. |

I literally bought my 128i the first time I saw it, and the next day drove it from FL to VA. I put 2,000 miles on it in the first week before ever putting it on the lift and checking it out.
It's a BMW, what's not to love? I'd drive this sucker to the moon. |

I did a ~3500 km (~2200 mi) road trip last summer from Saskatoon, SK to Sun Valley, ID. The destination was the Sun Valley Road Rally. Zero problems with the 135i but I did have to drive through some highway construction zones that made me pretty nervous.
One spot on a highway they had removed the asphalt and I had to drive through extremely soft dirt with large chunks of asphalt mixed in. I definitely did not have the clearance necessary but luckily no damage. After another construction zone where they were resurfacing, there was a worrisome grinding noise when making tight turns but it ended up being just a bunch of small rocks stuck in the suspension/front end and eventually they came out on their own. On the way to Sun Valley we were following Here Maps because at the time Google Maps didn't work offline for directions and it lead us off-roading for a bit before we turned around. When you are dodging large rocks and catching up to a pack of mountain bikers, you're probably not on a road meant for a 1er. I do admit to being a little worried about having any mechanical issues as most of the trip was through sparsely populated areas. I even went as far as mapping out some preferred gas stations as they were really spread out in same places and I wanted to make sure I could get premium gas. That said it was worth the trip. The Sun Valley Road Rally was awesome and I really enjoyed a lot of the drive. In the future I would like to drive to the west coast of Canada and maybe down the pacific coast down to California. I have driven from San Diego all the way up the coast to Seattle but it was in a Jeep. I would love to do that drive in a sporty car. |
