New Question on TINT

I had my car tinted by the dealership.

They charged 250 i think. maybe 300. dont remember.

Being my frist car, i have no idea how tint works.
Can someone knowledgeable fill me in. Can i take it to a place to get it darker?

The dealership put 50% in the front and 35% in the rear and back.
They refused to go any darker for liability reasons.

Will i be able to find a place where they would keep my old tint and gimme new ones for little charge?

Window Tint put simply is a plastic/film bonded to the windows.

You can get them darker by either removing them and re-applying a darker shade of tint....or adding to the existing tint.

If you take it to a tint shop they should give you some options depending on how much darker u want to go.

You would have to remove the existing tint and then add the new tint. I never heard of putting on two layers of tint.

50% is hardly dark at all and nowhere near enough for me. The legal limit in AZ is 35% for the front and thats not dark enough. I didn't want anything crazy like 5% all the way around but the 20% I have works like a charm.

Can someone state what's dark and what's light? I always get different information from (I guess) people that don't truly know themselves.

For example, is 35% supposed to be a "little" tint? Where as 50% is "more" tint?

If the 50% is not enough for you, how come the 20% 'works like a charm'???

... i guess im not as nub as other people lol!

100% means no tint.

0% means no light comes in.

therefore, 25% means 25% light gets in, this is way darker than lets say 35% or 50%, which have 35% light and 50% light coming in respectively. 5% is what the "gangsters" have where it us usually accompanied by chrome 20's.

I'm looking for something from 20-25%

Tint is typically measured as what percentage of the light still gets through the film.

A brick wall would be a "0% tint." Clear glass is "100%".

The lower the percentage, the darker the tint.

You can either have the existing tint removed, or you can apply a new film over your existing film.

I had 30% from the dealer and had 35% put over that. Now I am about as dark as 18% tint. Which is dark enough for me, and the cops don't pull you over, as they do for 5%. :-)

Wink

How illogical is that??

A light 'attenuating' system graded by the light 'transmission' level?

Maybe the gangsters & tuners that thought it up weren't too hot at school?

Anyhow, if i have a 50% tint then my theory holds, right!!

You can layer the tints I have mine layered and they are perfect. 5%. and im not a gangsta. 50% tint is pointless you can hardly notice it.

Get the 50 taken off and atleast 35% put on the front. Check your local state laws regarding tint to avoid a ticket for having it too dark. Consider if you are going to leave the state and move in the near future as to what % of tint you need. Usually 35% is legal everywhere. Good for those who move around alot like me.

When I lived there how come I had to bribe some guy at a local shop down the street to give me an inspection sticker because my tint was to dark to pass? I only had 20%.

but then again i dont know how the NY laws are... probably similar to CA's?

I've been tinting my cars since I was 16, so I know what I'm talking about.

The percentage refers to the amount of sunlight being let in. So 50% means, 50% of light can come in....5% means only 5% of light can come in.

Lower percent = Darker the tint...End of Story

Limousines have two layers of 5% tint...couple of my buddies have 2 layers as well because they want their tints RIDICULOUSLY dark.

But for this guy's purposes he's better off removing the existing tint and re-applying a new darker tint.

Just a big headsup. The factory windows already have a 5-10% tint. So if you put a 35% tint (legal) onto the already tinted window, the VLT, or total Visible Light Transition will knock down to 25-30% which is illegal here in MA. Again, laws vary from state, opinions on whether or not to run illegal run from state to state, it's all up to you. Just wanted to give a headsup if you want 25%, you want the film going on to be about 30-35%..
