Shame I don't think they ever made the F31 in the "35i" variety and I'm not a huge fan of that turbo 4, though it certainly feels a lot quicker than the identically spec'd mercedes turbo 4. The dinan tune should help though take it up near 300hp...but still a turbo 4.

What about an original X1 35i with the m-sport package. Slap a dinan tune or PPK on that and voila, almost like a wagon version of the IS. Maybe one even exists in stick? Back seat room is a lil tough to fit people in though, but dogs like it.
F31 diesel is where it's at

Or be a loser like me and trade the is for an x3.

The outlined oil cooler fitting is the standard item, the PPK cooler is on the driver side.
If you look inside the left wheel arch you will see a slatted plastic plate with the cooler behind.
Also you will notice it dosent have the Tyco electronics box .

What my tech told me was that the oil cooler is what is needed in order to install the PPK software. I noticed the absence of the electronics box and it is unclear to me what function this provides; I don't see it listed as one of the items in the parts list for the PPK software, which has been quoted to me as BMW part # 11-12-2-219-489. That item is apparently just a software code and some stick on labels. It is certainly possible that the tech is mistaken; my guess is that few dealerships have installed very many of these packages, and I don't even know if any currently sold models can even use this PPK version. The tech did look up my specific VIN number and told me that BMW indicates that my car can have the PPK part number above installed with no further modification.

I did read some earlier threads with posts from around 2010, and which dealt with models other than just the 135i, also the 335i for example. These threads were obviously discussing cars with an N54 engine, not the N55 in my 2013 135i. In those threads I read reference to not needing some of the parts in the version 2 kit if the car was not going to be tracked and would be limited to street use. Later posts in those threads in which some cars had N55 engines seemed to indicate that the designation of the engine as being the "M-Sport" type meant that the car could have the PPK installed without needing the "option code 440," which, perhaps, was specific to N54 cars. I just don't know.

Another thing I know is that the version 1 PPK (part number above) is still widely available, and the version 2 PPK kit appears to be completely unavailable. I am guessing that this may be because there were presumably no N54 engine cars made after 2010, other than the 1M which obviously does not need the PPK V. 2. That would mean we are 6-7 years out on those models and presumably the demand for such a kit is virtually non-existent, and anyone wanting to tune an earlier, N54 engine car would just likely choose a 3rd party tune anyway.

If you can clarify any of this, please do.

PPK1 can be installed on the stock car but PPK2 (bigger radiator and extra oil cooler)will give you extra cooling for track days and hard prelonged use.

Thanks for this information. I am a "spirited driver" at times, generally when overtaking other vehicles on windy twisty 2 lane mountain roads. I occasionally drive on freeways with a speed limit up to 80 mph, and generally don't exceed the speed limit by more than about 5 mph in that case. I don't use the car for pulling a trailer or other type of similar use. It is sometimes hot in which case I use the air conditioning. I do not track and have no interest in doing so, especially with this car.

Would any of this use pattern suggest the need or benefit of the added hardware? I am guessing the answer is "no."

Actually, PPK2 includes an auxiliary water cooler, not an extra oil cooler.

I had PPK1 since 2011 and also am a "spirited Driver" and my car has never overheated. I don't believe PPK2 is necessary unless you track your car and such, as was said above by anglocanadian.

Thanks very much, you guys, I think I will have it installed in the late fall, hopefully on the same visit where I get my airbag replaced.

ppk 1 installed here too. Just drove from Las Vegas to Palm Springs in 100+ temps. 80 mph for 4 hours up & down hills. Car was at 240-245 part of the time but no overheating. Doesn't overheat in Vegas summers either. If I decided to start tracking it if get the bigger fan. The tiny added water cooler.... Meh.

Currently have the Dinan Stage 2 tune (as of last April) instead of my previous PPK1. No overheating issues at all. Oil temp is the same as when I first got the car.

Luckily, still have the sweet sounds that PPK is known for.

I just picked up #104 on Sunday from the dealership the original owner bought it from. 2013 VRM 135is coupe 6MT w/coral interior. 19k miles, all service records at Mountain View BMW, Premium/Tech/Comfort/Nav, I even got 2 sets of BMW floormats with it!

I've got a JB4, VRSF charge pipe, K&N drop in filter and LUX LED halos on the way. Should be a pretty nifty toy.

She sits in the garage next to my 2012 X3 Xdrive35i and overall is the 3rd BMW that we've owned. Previously we had a '95 cosmos black M3 with dove vaders in it. It feels good to get back into something sporty again, pretty significant upgrade from the '06 IS350 she's replacing

Welcome! I just saw that car sitting on the lot at Mtn View a couple weeks ago. They had it priced at 32,900. Mind sharing what you ended up paying? Trying to figure out where the market is at around here, I've got my lease end coming up.

Congrats on a very rare color!

Hey Worra, yep, that's the one!

I ended up getting it for $30k even out the door and they gave me 8k on trade for my '06 IS350 that had the fubar airbags and water pump and a jillion miles. I felt that considering the mileage and that it only had one owner and is in excellent condition in a great color combo that it was a pretty fair deal

I could have got a decent amount more for the IS350 had I sold it myself, but it still had a Texas title and I didn't really want to sell the car to someone knowing that the airbags were potentially F'd. The car spent all except the last 3 years of its life in Texas, which is even worse for the airbags than here. We tried to get them replaced at lexus as part of the recall but they don't have any airbags for it in stock and they don't know when or if they will be in stock and they can't promise any kind of date on replacing them. We also got a really nice letter from them saying to avoid carrying passengers in the front seat until the airbag is swapped out. Uhhhhh yeah, that's not gonna work...

I looked around quite a bit, there are very few 135is available for sale at the moment, and the next closest one was down in LA. Also, while the DCT is nice my wife absolutely refuses to get a BMW that's not stick. I don't blame her, it's awesome!

If you're not driving a BMW with a stick, you're just steering it

Does using a long stick to push the gas pedal cause you're lazy count? If so, I'm golden!

For you, we make an exception.

BTW, I can't take credit for that quote, it's in this great E46 330ci video from RCR:

So, on a personal level and due to history and experience, there is a common bond there among the initial owners and the trials and tribulations we may have gone through together.

While the car is exactly the same to the subsequent owners, the experience is a little different, and the camaraderie is not quite the same.

Wheel hub rust

Hi all,

I've been noticing that there is rust buildup around the hub of my wheels (more so on the rear wheels). When I took my car in to a local detailer, he suggested having the hubs painted (which they can do for $150). I looked around the forum, and it sounds like hub rust is fairly common -- but I wasn't sure if painting over the hub is a good idea. Does anyone have any experience with this?

thanks!
