PFC race compounds for the 135i

Im sure some of you have seen the group buy thread over in the breaks/suspension/chassis section but there have been a slight change in plans so I wanted to start a new thread which included a poll.

Ive been in contact with Speed-Freaks, LLC (tier 1 PFC dealer) regarding pads for the 135i. They had a PFC group buy on m3forum that I noticed back in August and contacted them about... only to find out that PFC did not make pads that work with the stock 135i calipers. So they have been working directly with PFC to come up with something. The project started to gain momentum and then was put on hold for a couple months. Well, yesterday I was told that PFC is ready to move forward with the project but the the options will be limited to their new 11 and 08 compounds.

I was asked to put up a poll to see what people are most interested in. *I was initially told the group buy would be for the 11, 12 and possibly 13 compounds, which is why those are the options listed in the poll. As of 12/22/2013 PFC has confirmed that the 11 and 08 compounds will be the only compounds produced for the 135i for now. Please vote only for the 11 if you are interested in that or the 12 if you are interested in the 08*

Compound Descriptions:

11 Compound
11 Compound is a new generation sprint and medium distance friction —the ultimate in control, with superior disc conditioning. 11 compounds were developed from the 01 compound with improved bite, modulation, and release characteristics. It is ultra smooth and developed to reduce wheel locking at the end of a stop. Brake with confidence—brake with ultimate control and modulation.
Typical applications; Ideal use for medium-low grip venues where control and modulation is at a premium. Also racing venues where ABS systems are used, .11 can be used in a large spectrum of temperature ranges. 11’s wear is par with PFC’s legendary 01 compound. Virtually zero taper wear when raced in a properly designed race caliper.

08 Compound
08 compounds are one of PFC newest and have gained immediate favor in Endurance Sportscar, and GT racing due to its performance in applications where smooth initial bite is a must. 08 have a slight friction rise with temperature, excellent release and modulation characteristics. Very low abraded disc wear with a fine grey slate like disc finish, similar to 01. Despite its considerable performance, 08 wears the longest of all PFC pads and easily matches wear of the other competitors with much higher bite
Typical applications: Ideal use for endurance where long wear is at a premium. Also racing venues where ABS systems are used. Recommended for HPDE/Track days.

Ill mention again that I will be leading the charge on this so feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

If you are interested please post up which compound you are most interested in (incase they can only do one). I will be making a list to keep track of the amount of interest. Thanks guys.

Below is the list of people interested.

List:
1. MMisencik157 - 08 compound front and rear
2. Sixle - 11 compound front and rear
3. jafo1701 - 08 compound front and rear

A lot of the PFC pads are very good endurance pads, and a lot of tracking enthusiasts love them.

Voted. PFC 12's for me, as they replace the "08".

I hope these are available soon! I was about to pull the trigger on Pagid RS-29's or Hawk DTC-60, and accept the broken bus brake screech noise all race pads typically make. Dont want to deal with weekly track/street pad/rotor swaps even though I can DIY them. I heard that the PFC type 97 compound are not that bad for noise. (Both 11 or 12 compound will be an excellent replacement for 97. )

to MMisencik157: Is there a way for you to import the user feedback/results from the initial thread for this?

See this ...
http://www.bestbrakes.com/c/car-seri...+135i+M+Series

I am confused by the "135i M series" tag, so I asked the vendor to confirm whether these are for the 1M or the 135i ...

Want to make sure I'm reading this correctly, would the new "11" compound be the most ideal of the three for stock-ish 135i's on wide/aggressive street tires? Very interested, especially in a front set.

Thank you kindly, sir Ill update the first post with the list. Im going to assume that anybody who wanted the 08 will now want the 12 so Ill change that.

Also I believe those are for the 1M, they just did a poor job at labeling it.

Either the 11 or 12 compound would work well for any of the more aggressive street tires, definitely anything from the EHP category (R-S3, RE-11A, ZII, AD08R, Rival, etc.) The 11 will be slightly more aggressive and should have slightly better modulation characteristics while the 12, being an endurance compound, will last longer. If you like a little more front bias and normally stagger compounds then you may like the 11 up front with the 12 in the rear.

What are the next steps and agenda for this poll? How big a list in one type of compound do you need for a "pilot" group buy?

Found this article, which could be of help to users to help them select the proper PFC pad compound...

OP, may I suggest you put this into your opening post?

Which PFC compound is right for you: http://www.ogracing.com/blog/2013/04...-right-for-me/

How To: Choosing A Race Brake Pad: http://www.ogracing.com/blog/2012/10...ace-brake-pad/

Well, that being said, what can you tell us about the differences between different compounds?

When you’re picking a brake pad there are many different factors to consider. What works for your buddy who drives a similar car might not work for you – it depends on your driving style and how you use the brakes.

Everyone’s different: Some like to go in hard and deep and stand on the pedal. Like in a car with ABS – let the ABS slow the car down and then get back on the power. Then there are other drivers that tend to finesse the brakes; they won’t come into the corner as hard but they come out a lot faster. These drivers use a little more distance to slow the car down. I’m personally in-between the two. Everyone’s different and will have different preferences to what pads they like. If you’re picking out your first track pad you want to pick a pad that’s easy to modulate, so you don’t lock up or get into the ABS.

What works for your buddy who drives a similar car might not work for you- it depends on your driving style and how you use the brakes.

The Pagid RS-19 and RS-29 Yellows have a very nice linear torque curve and have great modulation especially on non-ABS cars. The Performance Friction 08 and 06-Compounds are also really good pads. I absolutely love the 06-Compound, even though I had to get used to the torque characteristics. The harder you press the pedal the better they stop your car and they don’t totally kill your rotors either. That’s another factor: Some pads will stop your car like its nobody’s business, but they’ll generate more heat, sometimes cracking the rotors. When you’re racing on a budget, this is a big deal obviously. The Pagid Yellows and Performance Friction 08-Compound are pretty good on the rotors, as are the newer Hawk compounds.

Hawk Blues are great on Spec-Miatas and naturally aspirated 944′s – it’s a nice pad for a lower HP, lighter weight car. The Blues just get too hot on heavier, higher HP cars. The HT-10′s worked great on my [911] Carrera but they did wear the rotors a bit quicker. Their new DTC-compound is friendlier on the rotors, but I’ve found they wear a little faster then some of the other pads on the market.

If you’re picking out your first track pad you want to pick a pad that’s easy to modulate, so you don’t lock up or get into the ABS.

I personally run the PFC 08-Compound on my 944 turbo. On my 964, I like the Pagid Yellows on the front and Pagid Blacks on the rear. I’ve tried Pagid RS-44 Oranges on the 964, but I didn’t like them because the car would overheat them."

If PFC actually pulled through I'm almost certain I'd take the 135is to VIR this year.

Bump , if anyone is interested in outstanding Performance Friction pads for stock 135 calipers, please respond if you haven't done so. Select your preferred compound, as per initial post.

Thanks.

How much does a set cost?

I'd be interested in a dedicated track pad and would probably choose the 12.

I still have Ferodo DS2500 pads waiting in the wings, but would be interested in trying out some PFC's. I suppose compound 12 gets my vote, but would they still have bite when cold (ie street use)?

Sorry for disappearing for a while... Ive been slammed for the past two weeks. A lot has happened and Im not sure what the newest game plan is. PFC may have jumped the gun a little on the 12 compound... apparently it is VERY expensive to produce (some pretty exotic materials in the compound) and may be limited to their race calipers and a select few porsches and other platforms if they cannot sell them for a reasonable price.

I need to make a few more phone calls but it sounds like the 08 will continue to be produced and may just be the only endurance compound option from PFC for most street cars.

Im going to try and find out more tonight and Ill post up as soon as I know whats happening.

Thanks for the update. Im sure the PFC compound 08 would be fine for most of us, so please post back with next steps.

I finally heard back and it has been confirmed by PFC that the 11 and 08 will be the first two compounds produced for the 135i. Unfortunately, we wont know the final pricing and ETA until sometime around February.

Ill update the OP and the list to reflect the new information.

Good news. I would be interested in PFC 08 compound pads. Are they talking front calipers or rears too?
Hopefully they make them available for the upcoming track season.
