Need some help. I have a 135i sport package. Lately I have not been able to shift into 1st gear. It engages about half way but won't fully engage. It periodically happens either at a full stop or at a rolling speed. I've tried going back into neutral, releasing the clutch and pushing back down, but still unable to engage. The only way is to let go of the clutch half engaged in first, wait for the loud popping noise, then engage. Any ideas?

Put it into second then try first again.

Your 1st gear synchro sounds like its toast. If you're under warranty (I hope you are), BMW will jam a new transmission in there. Otherwise, you could possibly get it rebuilt (haven't heard of anyone doing it, though).

Yes, I'm under warranty, fluids seem to be all good. Bringing it in on Monday again, they keep saying they can't replicate it. Only happens a few times a month, but it is awkward when I'm stuck at a green light with traffic piling up.

I've owned a few manual tranny bmw's and they all seem to do that. Draining the fluid sometimes helps if your kinda hard on the tranny. Not sure how often if ever bmw says on this car but in my e36m3 and e46m3 lifetime fluid was kinda shitty.
