I do not find trucks to be unsually bad about moving over. There are violators of the rules in every type of vehicle. Our high beams are not as noticable to SUVs and trucks, however. I also have a SUV which isn't real high but cars high beams don't look the same when you are up higher. But it is still noticable, they just consider their desires more important than ours.
The most frustrating are the really big trucks that want to pass despite the fact they can't even go the speed limit going uphill. At least the jacked up pickups can maintain a steady pace (if the driver is awake). Jim

I have experienced and seen this quite often. One time comes to mind in my WRX, a large black lifted Ford with super huge tires wanted to take me. The guy obviously had a ton of money invested in his rig. I took him at the first light, was not even close. he was very aggravated so at the next light I took off slow he mashed it burning rubber, squealing tires, etc.- probably burned half the tread off his tires, I just watched him take off and laughed. I typically stay form these large trucks- they drive crazy, tail gate and think they are king of the road. I just mind my business and get out of their way. Some of these trucks are pretty fast off the line and will eat a lot of cars- some have close to 1000 HP. The best way to surprise them is on the highway- when they are going 100 or 110, they don't have much more due to wind drag, super huge tires, etc. It's so nice to open it up and pull past them with ease as they have it floored and just don't understand why they can't go any faster!

Never had it happen to me personally until literally 20 minutes ago. on my way home from class just cruising on the highway and some loud giant ram 1500 lifted on 35's pulls up next to me, then floors it drops a gear and slowly started accelerating. dropped 1 gear to fifth and just cruised away to 100 before i let off again. He was still persistent since i guess i hurt his man hood but he wasn't catching up anytime soon. And he probably wasted a good 1/4 tank of gas.

As an owner of a redneck sedan (aka Crew Cab Pickup), all I got to say is that if you want a few laughs, check out the redneck sedan forums - War Stories section. Incredible delusions of granduer.

Said deputy happened to be my brother, who immediately pulled the guy over. 100 in a 70 and driving on a suspended license. Needless to say this guy had a very bad afternoon.

Speaking of diesel smoke I assume these trucks aren't subject to CAFE standards cause they let out tons of black smoke at every stop light which just has to be worse than regular cars.

I love it when these giant diesels beasts wipe their arse on these little cars, blowing giant billows of smoke. Something awseome about the raw and unrefined power.

Kinda hard to blow smoke on a fast moving object.

Here's some of the wikipedia article on diesel exhaust:
"Diesel combustion exhaust is a major source of atmospheric soot and fine particles, which is a fraction of air pollution implicated in human cancer,[5][6] heart and lung damage,[7] and mental functioning.[8] Diesel exhaust also contains nanoparticles, which have additional health impacts, and are as yet poorly understood.[citation needed] [edit] ParticulatesDiesel particulate matter (DPM), sometimes also called diesel exhaust particles (DEP), is the particulate component of diesel exhaust, which includes diesel soot and aerosols such as ash particulates, metallic abrasion particles, sulfates, and silicates. When released into the atmosphere, DPM can take the form of individual particles or chain aggregates, with most in the invisible sub-micrometre range of 100 nanometers, also known as ultrafine particles (UFP) or PM0.1. The main particulate fraction of diesel exhaust consists of fine particles. Because of their small size, inhaled particles may easily penetrate deep into the lungs. The rough surfaces of these particles makes it easy for them to bind with other toxins in the environment, thus increasing the hazards of particle inhalation. [edit] Health effectsExposures have been linked with acute short-term symptoms such as headache, dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, coughing, difficult or labored breathing, tightness of chest, and irritation of the eyes and nose and throat[citation needed]. Long-term exposures can lead to chronic, more serious health problems such as cardiovascular disease, cardiopulmonary disease, and lung cancer.[5][6] Ambient traffic-related air pollution was associated with decreased cognitive function in older men.[8]" The big difference between gas and diesel engines seems to be the fine particles produced by the diesel. It seems like the ugly appearance of the black clouds coming out of diesels is a good warning to avoid the vicinity. The particulate matter in that exhaust is not just unattractive it is unhealthy (but no vehicle exhaust is something I want to deliberately breath). If BMW brings the turbo diesel version of the X1 over it may be my next purchase, however. I am not a diesel hater. But I don't like it when I see a plume of exhaust from a diesel headed my way. Jim

I agree. Look at how clean burning the '09-'11 335d is though. I was strongly looking at that before purchasing my 135.

I think the 1-series just generally doesn't get a lot of respect so everybody from pickups to Altimas to Audis want to take you on.
And least thats what I used to think. Then I was talking to one of the senior execs here at work who's got a new M5 and he says people are always trying to race him too. Seriously, how many cars do you think he encounters on a daily basis are actually faster than his M5? I'm guessing .0001% but that doesn't stop people from trying.

With respect to the big so called "macho" trucks, I think it is funny to see how small some of the drivers are. Seems like there is some truth to the theory that they want that sort of vehicle to compensate for what they lack...

I've noticed this often around here as well. There are several guys at my gym who drive these huge lifted trucks, and each of them are short and overly buff.

Power to weight ratio fellas. Stock for stock a 128 and 135 will beat these trucks.
That being said, I have seen a few diesel trucks absolutely destroy some seriously fast cars on the highway. I remember cruising with the guys from supraforums a few years ago and one of their friends had a Ram 1500 diesel that had a few things done to it. They make ungodly amounts of torque and were keeping pace with/beating 500-600hp Supras. But of course, trucks that quick are very few in numbers. |
