Hans was not tightening the vanos bolts at that time.

Haha. I guess they looked up all of the vehicles that Hans bolted on the VANOS. I always wondered!

It was Helga - she went to work at the Leipzig plant, after leaving the 1980 Olympics playing for the East German Women's Soccer team.

How appropriate to the Service Advisor to say it was a common failure when it happened to my 2011 135i back in July last year. It didn't even showed the CES light, it just left me stranded in the middle of the highway.

I hope BMW handles this recall better than they handled the N54 HPFP recall. I had an appointment to have the recall performed on my 2009 135i and BMW would not let my dealer do it until the HPFP failed. Soured me on BMW to the point that I traded the 2009 135i on an Audi A5 the next week. Within 14 months I factory ordered my 2012 135i as I could not tolerate the Audi. BMW makes great cars (not so sure about the newest models), but they and their dealers should treat customers better.

To update anyone who may have interest... our arbitration hearing was today and they ruled in our favor, against BMW. Quite a few owners are having warranty work take an unreasonable amount of time to complete so it may be relevant.

The complaint wasn't so much about the actual VANOS causing the engine to fail, but the length of time it took to repair. The car was out of service 58 days while they attempted to find a fix until ultimately replacing the engine when they couldn't.

Edit to include that this vehicle was NOT affected by the recall.
