Squeaking when backing up in reverse
Sometimes when I back up in reverse my car produces this loud squeaking noise. I know I've seen this issue somewhere else with other bimmers but can't locate it on search right now..., but anytime I take it to the stealership they always tell me the same BS...not able to replicate the problem...Is this the parking brake sticking, or the pads unevenly wearing on the rotors? Should I replace the rotors and pads?? It's not that big of a deal but it's just embarrassing backing up in a 2012 BMW sounding like a janky 99 hyundai

Mine does it. No idea what causes it.

Taken mine to the dealer quite a few times they said it was the parking brake. Must have not been fully disengaged while driving and the pads glazed over. They wouldn't replace them because they still had tons of meat left. Mines gotten better. Hasn't happened in a while. only took two years. I usually had to pull the ebrake up and down a few times and it would stop.

Every once in a while you should pull up hard on the parking brake lever just before coming to a stop to keep the shoes nice and clean. The parking brakes are a drum/shoe design, rather than pads and rotors.

This happens to my car, and this is what I've deduced:
If you're parked on enough of an incline (it doesn't take much) that the brakes will hold the car when the clutch is depressed, then it will do that from a get-go, even if you are in reverse. In other words, the car doesn't realize you're in reverse and don't need to be "held." I can be in a regular parking lot with a slight incline, clutch in, put it in reverse, and the squeak happens. All I have to do is go an inch forward to release the brakes and it goes away. It's a totally stupid system that I wish would just go away.

My garage is level, still happens to me. Usually when the humidity is high. At least that's when I notice it the most. Could just be coincidence. |

Same on both counts. However I'm experimenting with not using the parking brake when I park the cars in the garage overnight, especially when the car is wet due to rain and snow, and I'm now getting less squeaks.

Try this experiment: if you hear the squeak, put it in first and inch forward, then go back. Squeak might go away.

This was one of my first issues when I brought my vehicle. I had to pay out of pocket for the dealer to inspect the issue. Turns out the parking brake required some adjustment, I believe it is as others have said, it wouldn't complete disconnect. Anyways they fixed it and it has bothered me since.

Sorry, but this is bum advice. If anything it will make matters worse by depositing more shoe material in the drum and glazing the shoe and drum surface. The drum pbrakes on disk brake cars only function is to stop the wheel rotation when activated. They shouldn't wear....unless you forget to deactivate them when driving off. They aren't designed to be activated while in motion.
