Been reading way to much about HPFP issues
Hey everyone, Im new to the forums, but I have been reading around here for awhile now. I currently own a 2008 VW R32 and im getting a little tired of the DSG transmission. I have always liked the 135I, but all this talk about failing HPFP and blown turbos etc scares the crap out of me. I have a few questions, I did a search but I got no luck. If the fuel pump is such a problem and BMW is not doing any thing about it how come aftermarket companies don't do something about it obviously there are companies out there that build fuel pumps for other cars aren't there? I remember reading about blown engines and turbos from re flashes are the fuel pump and this issue related? Lastly, when I buy a car I always buy salvaged (never had a problem yet) would you advise me to purchase a salvaged/rebuilt 135? I think it might be kind of risky purchasing a BMW with out warranty considering everybody I know with a 335, 135, e92 m3 has nothing but problems. I know three 335 owners who have had their fuel pumps go, one 135 owner and my cousins m3 is towed to the dealer every other week for electrical problems.
Any input would be appreciated. Thank you |

Buy a new 135 and enjoy it. There is no guarantee that you will have a pump problem. If it does go, you have a 4 year/50,000 mile warranty. You can also get an extended warranty if you plan on keeping it.
We have an 09, and no pump problem. If it does happen, it will be fixed with a loaner and a cup of coffee! The key is buying for a dealer with a good service dept. I would not recommend a salvaged vehicle. Remember, they are "SALVAGED". |

Yeh the thing is slavaged = 18k out of my pocket brand new equals 35-40k out of my pocket lol.. My family has been buying salvaged cars for the past 15 years if not more we have never had any bad luck with them. I bought my r32 with 6300 miles on it for 18k compared to the used 25k and the 35k from the dealer. I guess you can say I cant afford a new one lol..

Approaching 26k miles w/o any pump issues here... (not sure where your hearing of "engines/blown turbos") Car's not perfect, no car is. One thing is for certain... it's a whole lotta fun!

the fuel pump's warranty is actually been extended to 10yrs/100k miles.
I'm on 24kmiles, just got my car back with a 2nd pump replacement. It's a crap shoot, some people I know who run their cars hard and have way more miles than I do, don't have a single problem. The blown turbo is probably running a tune, and I've only heard on incident of it. so either that guy was SOL with a slightly weaker turbo or he did something crazy with a tune (you know, people don't usually post what they did, especially when their car blows up and want the dealer to fix it.) The last time I saw a dead 135 for sale was on ebay. it's pretty badly damaged in the front, probably frame damage, but seems the engine is still good. it's listed for something like 15k or 22k, I don't quite remember. if the engine/tranny is good, it might be worth it. |

ya the blown turbo thing would have been an isolated incident. I wouldn't worry about that in the SLIGHTEST.
The HPFP issue is a hit or miss, LOTS of people not having problems, but enough with problems..... (and the extended warranty is extremely long on this piece) I'd be concerned about going salvage though, especially when combining with HPFP. I would imagine a salvage title would kill the HPFP warranty, which could become expensive quickly.... |

Thanks for all the responses you guys are helpful. Its great that the blown turbo thing was a isolated problem that calms me down a little haha.. The title would kill the warranty. I took my R32 in for a messed up window regulator they told me by law they are not even allowed to touch the car blah blah they can only fix recalls. That's why i am a little iffy on purchasing a salvaged bmw.. I dunno.

The warranties were only extended for 2007 and 2008 models. There have been several reports of failures on 2009 and 2010 models, but no warranty extension.

I came from a modded 3.2 A3 and a modded 2008 R32 before the 135i, it's simple, just do it! You will not regret the change!

Mine is a July 2008 build with 10,000 miles. No HPFP issues at all. The only issue I have had was a lefthand adaptive headlight that needed replaced within the first 2 months due to manufacturing defect.

Robmanson that's the thread I was talking about.. I think there was another guy with the same problem, I could be wrong. I guess it is a hit and miss, but I assume you do see signs of a failing pump so if you feel the car is having problems starting replacing it would obviously fix it... I guess its not as bad as I thought..
Thanks |

I'm taking mine in next week for the second time to have the long start problem worked on. First time was last June and they replaced the HPFP, this time they are telling me that it may be injectors and something else, not necessarily the HPFP. We'll see.
