Start/Stop Button

Looking to swap out the start/stop button in my friend's 135i with a custom red button we made using a start button unit from getbmwparts.com
On the e9x, the start button is removed by removing the trim and pressing the two prongs on the start button to push it out. Considering the 135i's start button is on the dash, has anyone removed their's before? How can it be removed?

Steps to remove Start/Stop switch

1. You need to remove the center vents by using a credit card or plastic trim removal tool to separate the top portion of the vent from the dash.

2. Disconnect wiring to the switches on the vent and set aside.

3. Reach around to the back side of the start/stop switch and compress two spring loaded features to allow the switch to be removed from the dash.

4. Disconnect wiring to the switch.

Wow - your friend is actually agreeing to this? Or has he gone to Mexico for the month of January - leaving the car in your capable hands?

The only thing I wish they did with the button is make it concave instead of convex. Also, when you press it down just slightly, it feels like it wiggles a bit. That, to me, makes it feel cheap. There is also a lot of unnecessary travel just to turn the car on. Stiffen it up, reduce the travel and make the button concave, and you got yourself a nicer way to start the car.

Normally Im not picky on something like this, but it just feels to me that they didnt put a whole lot of thought into it. It could be better, thats all.

This is one way to do it. Or you can skip taking out the vent entirely. Just use a trim removal tool, or as I used a plastic putty knife, and work your way around the start button trim and pull the unit out. It came out really easy for me. I took off my start button trim and painted it. I'll be taking the start button out shortly to change it from orange LED to blue. The whole thing just pops in and out. Just like almost everything else inside the car.
