Means "Drivetrain malfunction – if on, this light shows that the drivetrain has been damaged and the car needs to be serviced as soon as possible."
It could also just be a battery issue or crankshaft position sensor going bad. Here's a picture from an old 90's BMW though that says automatic transmission issue: |

My guess is a transmission fault of some kind.

This may help. Here is a link to what appears to be a BMW document listing codes and indicator lamp icons for the E90... including the icon you are seeing.
