There are some major gas chains that do not use large quantities of ethanol in their mixes.. like Sunoco, Mobil/Exxon (or only use it regionally). I wonder what the political (or financial) influence is on that list?
I see replies here to the tune of "I'm not buying **** gas anymore then", which, if there is a political or financial influence behind that list, is exactly what BMW would be getting benefit from. Ethonol mixes, in the US, have to say the percentage right on the pump. Just keep an eye out for the >10% ethanol stickers, and make up your own mind. |

Top Tier is marketing hype.
I haven't seen anything that says BMW directly endorses Top Tier - they just say that the minimum EPA standards are lacking. Also, note that : http://forums.audiworld.com/tt/msgs/1308956.phtml Quote:

The recent E10 blend has caused significant rough start issues with my other vehicle. It was so bad that it would nearly stall and threw engine codes enough to light the "Check Engine" light. The other vehicle manufacturer (Land Rover) is working on a DME software fix. This only occurs on cold starts as described in the OP. Clearly, not all manufacturers were prepared for this.

Just got this letter and was going to post it. One question (and I emailed this to the service manager as well). When talking about water in the system and its effects, I'm thinking it might be a good idea to drop in a container of dry gas before filling up. I had one car that was very picky (especially in the winter), and if I didn't put in dry gas before each time I filled up, it would run like crap, not want to start up, etc. Dry gas smoothed it right out..
Anyhow, just curious if anyone else will be doing this. I have noticed significantly longer starts lately..

We have a 2004 E46 and a 2006 E90 and we stick with Shell if we can. We've never had any problems with rough idles or starting or whatever...knock on wood

After reading ska's post, my impression is that if you use any other gasoline other than the one from ska post, there is a chance that you are gettting bad quality fuel (or fuel that contains more that 10% ethenol). I have been using Shell and it is on the list so it sort of give me some peice of mind but not totally since anyone of those company can buy their way into the list with a little extra dinero (as mentioned). Govt need to keep an eye on these company and make sure they are playing fair.

If BMW truely endorsed the Top Toer fuels, you would have received a letter from BMW, not one of their ill-informed (despite best intentions) dealers. |

I have been using Shell most of the time and still experiencing cold start issues. The interesting thing that most of us start complaining about this starting this spring. I didn’t have any issues during past winter (when it was really cold ). Is that means that gas company’s changed something to there gas mixture just recently?

I just called the Mobile 800 number and they told me that Ethanol is only in a few states now and it's only 10%. CA, NY, CT and MN are some of the states that have it. It will be posted on the pump. So the next time you fill up look for the Ethanol sticker.
Here in MA we don't have it yet

Hmmm. Looking more and more like BMW getting in bed with a few gas companies. That's really crappy. Like there isn't already enough gas company games going on these days.

Found some info regarding origin of Top Tier. According to Shell:
"Top Tier Detergent standards were developed by BMW, General Motors, Honda and Toyota and were aimed at reversing the national trend toward lower gasoline additive concentration". Link: http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?...s_ga_0111.html Top Tier idea sounds good to me. May be, we can get better quality fuel at the end? |
