Driver Footwell Right-hand-side heat

I have made a posting about this item before, however the problem has evolved a little bit.

The Situation

While driving any extended period of time there is a great amount of heat generated in the driver's foot well on the right hand side plastic and carpeting. This condition happens under normal driving conditions.

When driven with great enthusiasm... the carpeting and the plastic become HOT to the touch and will come to the point that it will almost start burning my leg if I am wearing shorts.

My SA and Dealer have been made aware of the problem and they have involved a regional service advisor to take a look at this issue. Further, they have involved BMW Ag in the issues as well. The dealer suspects that the mid-pipe is in too close proximity to the body and is transferring the heat to the cabin.

The question to all of you... are there any other 1m vehicles experiencing any sort of heat transmission from the underbody of the vehicle to the inside cabin? If so your input would be appreciated in helping solve this issue.

Please advise...

Update July 5 2011 at 10:00pm

While driving this evening with the ac on and off I noticed that the same area sweltering in heat now started to condensate due to the mixing of hot surface and cool air... How nice

Update July 7th 2011

Met with BMW regional engineer at dealer to discuss both heat concern in foot well and exhaust drone.

Heat issue: very well document of temperatures and causes of issue; exhaust heat. Visual inspection under vehicle shows that there is no reflective heat shield on driver side of transmission housing. By design is this a mistake?? The question has been sent to Germany. Engineer has told me that issue is top priority and answers will be forthcoming.

Exhaust drone: documented at various speeds and the question has been raised to Germany if a butterfly valve will be fitted to system in future. Status pending but not as high priority as heat issue.

@rapter: Mine is the same, when I get the engine really warm. Imho there's no way around that. My M3 did the same thing. The exhaust passes by there and if you let the car produce enough hot exhaust fumes, the exhaust will heat up anything and everything around it. My racecar has melted the soles of passengers sneakers.

I (luckely) don't have that problem but i can confirm that the 1M produces a lot of heat. I noticed that there is an enormous heat coming from underneath the car when it's on running temperature (oil 120°). I have to put my A/C on 19° Celsius to have a comfortable temp. inside the cabin.

Wow. This does not bode well for us folks living in the hot and humid parts of the world.

Here in Atlanta, July, August daytime temperatures can get into to the 100's (Fahrenheit) with 90% humidity or more.

Maybe BSM was not the best choice after all

Also, I could have saved a few bucks on the heated seats!

And to think, I was concerned about getting a vehicle ordered for the Florida market and bringing it to PA. The lack of heated seats WAS a concern before I read this thread.

I drove ours for a two hour trip Monday and the outside temperatures varied from 95 to 103 and I didn't notice the problem.

I agree. I've put about 1,500 miles on mine with temps in the 80 - 90 degree range and haven't felt any noticeable heat. That's very peculiar that there could be such a variance among our cars.

Now if there was only an easy solution to that damn droning noise at cruising speeds!

rapter, since reading about this issue a while ago that you've been experiencing, I've been checking periodically and haven't noticed any extreme temps.

I wonder... If you look under your car if you are able to see the reflective heat shield on both sides or only one.?

Heat issue BMW 128 2012

I'm having the same issue. Noticeable heat on the right side of the driver below the console. My car is three months old and less than 10,000 miles. If I turn off the fan it appears to go away. I'm thinking it has something to do with the heating and the vents. I don't think it's rocket science to have a dealer or have a mechanic identify where the heat is coming from. I will ask my dealer when I drive by in a day or so. I'm very surprised that nobody has found out what's going on.

I took delivery of the car in November and have intermittently noticed this issue. Warm enough that it's noticeable and mildly uncomfortable to rest my leg against that area.

My dealer found that the main supply pipe to the heater box is uninsulated, located within the right hand side footwell, that means when the engine is hot the heat from the cooling pipes are, was, transmitting directly into the cabin.

Together the dealer and I measured 84- degrees c... Which is really hot.

Dealer took apart the entire trim, burnt himself on the uninsulated pipe, and spoke with BMW engineers. The engineers sent a peak and stich reflective insulation to be applied to the inside face of the interior trim in an effort to reflect the heat back into the heat box area. At the time we measured 41-c which was a big improvement.

More to come in the summer when the heat rises... So far it is tolerable

Thanks for the thorough followup. Pretty much demystifies the issue. I'm pretty impressed that your dealer took down all the stuff and insulated it.

We'll see what happens in the summer ...

Uh-oh, sounds like a tell-tale sign for a future product recall. BMW will certainly investigate the matter. Don't want no Stella Liebeck hassle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liebeck...;s_Restaurants).

Anyway, gives the "it's a hot car" expression promptly a different meaning...

Since I am among the minority who drive this car in summer temperatures nowadays, I have to say I noticed this in my car as well two times, it was not untolerable but was annoying anyway. In both cases, I was after a relatively longer or engaging driving and the exhaust was probably quite hot. The exterior temps were not really hot though, less than 30 Celsius, closer to 25. My concern is this can be a serious problem when the car is driven under really hot temperatures and for a long voyage or so. I hope they will find a simple fix to this and make a recall sometime soon.
