Outside tire wear???

The previous owner put 18 inch wheels on my 128. The tires look like every other BMW I've owned (negative camber) so I would expect any excessive tire wear would show on the inside of the tire.

The tires on the car show significantly more wear on the outside than the inside. How would this happen?

Tires are rolling over when you make a turn. Either the tires are too wide for the wheels, or the tires are WAY low on air pressure.

Thanks, turns out they were very low. (Less than 20 psi) the tire pressure warning was on but I assumed it was because she fitted 18" tires on a 128i

Lesson: before you post about tire wear check your frickin tire pressure

Glad that fixed it. Drive it for a few days and watch the pressure. Report back if you continue to have tire wear issues.

You probably have too much toe-in on your alignment. If you really have serious outside wear I doubt it's due to low tire pressure even if the tires were low.

If they get too low the tire will roll over and wear the outside shoulder. If he continues to have issues with the tires inflated properly then yes, he could have an alignment problem. Lets fix one thing at a time.

@Fast.asleep, report back if you continue to have issues.

I find low pressure will wear both inside and outside of the tire. The inside will be especially scalloped due to folding every time the tire goes around.

The tire pressure is back where they should be and I will be getting a 4 wheel alignment as soon as I confirm the tie rods etc are OK.

If the new tires exhibit the same wear patterns after everything is done I'll post back.

Thanks everyone!
