This was one of many reasons I opted for an RS4 instead of an M3 (e.g. total number of imported RS4s in the US over 2 yrs equaled 1/3 of annual sales of M3s which of course will be produced for 4-5 yrs).

For people that want to pick one up in the secondary market, this is good news, you will have plenty to chose from. And yes, dealers should not be in the driver's seat and have the pricing leverage if BMW builds as many as it wants. I just hope I don't start seeing as many 2012 1 ///Ms as Evos, STIs, R32s, etc.
If it's a good car who cares how many they make? And seriously the RS4 over the M3? you're more worried about status than the car.

Seriously? You would not consider buying a grade A car simply because 'everyone else' might be able to buy one too? WTF? So I'm guessing you drive a 1988 Porsche 959 or a 1990 Ferrari F40? Either you both forgot the sarcasm tag or that there is the reason why people who don't own BMWs think BMW owners are snobs.

Well my lease is up in august 2011 and I go to study abroad in august 2011. Its like I planned this all along.

Now all I need to do is ED the car and register it to a loft in London for a year without paying VAT.

No doubt enthusiasm on display here made BMW rethink its original production plan.

Except the fact that one year production still probably equates to 2700 worldwide for the production year.

Based on what we know with full time production starting in March 2011 and going thru first quarter 2012, there should be approximately 12 months of production. I think there is usually a pause in August, and accounting for other holidays, it seems there will be actually 10 months of production. This corresponds to about 200 production days. If they produce only 20 cars a day, that is 4000 total over the production run. I believe M3 Adjustor indicated the Leipzig plant can crank out at least 700 total cars per day, so 20 1M coupes per day should be doable.

Based on what we now know, can anyone estimate when the first deliveries will arrive?

It has been indicated that May will be when they appear, is two months the normal time for production?

Sorry for sounding noobish but this will be the first new car I have bought from the production line!

Same here. I guess the best we can hope for is finding one unsold on a dealer's lot, which I'm going to assume won't happen.

this might be a stupid question but what is the reason they will produce this car only one year?

Because they're going to be rolling out the new 1-series in a year or so (hatch in Europe first). A 1-series M Coupe based on the new 1-series will roll out a couple of years later.

2006 MY had the E46 M3 and the E90 3 series being sold at the same time. I'll bet they they will do at least 2 production years for the 1SMC.

The BMW employees who have ordered a 1M Coupe will receive their cars at earliest Spring when the Summer tyres go back on.
With Germany and the rest of Europe following immediately afterwards and the UK and US Markets in early Summer. (Around May/June).

European customers will see the car first at the Brussels Autoshow in late January , then Geneva (Dont worry there will be other "World Exclusive" Premieres at Geneva.
Australia and Asia will head around Late Summer , although the 1M Coupe will make it's Asian premiere at the Shanghai Autoshow in late April.

The issue with production numbers is at first you generate the interest , and then the interest builds.
But like any other "performance Concept" when everything is finally released including specifcations and price you see interest drop by 30-40% and sometimes-50%. It happened with the M3 CSL. The official projections are that BMW will sell over 2000 units which will effectively bring the E82 production line to a close on schedule in early 2012, in order to begin production tooling for the next generation 1er Coupe.

The next generation 1M Coupe will not come until early 2014.

Cheers Scott. Thanks as always.

Will the 1M be on show at Brussels from the first public day? 15th I think.

Depending on the volume that is ordered you may be correct. We also have to think of the other moving parts in the world that is BMW M. The M3 will not be sold much longer. Maybe the end of next year and not show up again until 2014. Unless the Z4M is revived (quickly)or BMW comes to market with the Z2M in 2013 eliminating the 1M in 2012 would leave a void in the "entry level" BMW M world. Also it would give BMW a wider window to recoup the investment made in developing the 1M.

It's possible, maybe even likely, that we'll see a few 1M's lingering around unsold on dealer lots well into 2012. I'm recalling the Z4M's they had to discount massively to get rid of a couple years ago. Bad ass car for sure, but wildly impractical and expensive for most.

Based on what Scott said, if they stop all E82 production around March 2012, I have a hard time believing there will be any 2013 E82's, including 1M'S.

can't say that I'm not a bit disappointed about the reduced exclusivity that this news brings... but this definately means more leverage for me at the dealer (I currently have 2 separate deposits at different dealers in efforts to reduce the anticipated msrp+premium... may be it wouldnt be needed after all)... Interestingly, all these facts about the interior and the engine were outlined to me by one dealer... maybe they know more than they let-on to sometimes... He said that there would be a CF roof as option... still holding my breath for that one...

But the 1 series we have in North America came out in 2008, they cannot change it so soon, I would expect a mid life update.
I thought the new headlamps on the 1M were part of this update...

Is that the right timeframe? Seems a short time from start of production to delivery. Doesn't it usually take 9-12 weeks?

Thanks,

Mark.
