Post Break in Impressions

I've taken it pretty easy on the 1M during break in, wanting the dif and everything else to settle in nicely, and erring on the side of conservatism. I got the car back from its 1200 mile service Weds so I've have my first chance to get on it. Power wise my impressions so far have been mixed. The car seems surprisingly slow especially through second gear. (3rd and on it seems to pull harder??) The engine is basically useless after 5.5k rpm, and when the engine is not in over boost it really doesn't seem that fast. It really doesn't seem that much faster than an E46 M3 which is kind of disappointing. On another note, the brakes on the 1M are absolutely incredible. The only brakes that have impressed me more were on my father's GT3RS and Carrera GT. I also think BMW could have done a lot more with the exhaust on the car. The first 30 seconds are pure joy. After that, even at WOT the sound is quit subdued.

Do you have it in MDM or traction control off? I wonder if you're getting wheel-spin that's shutting down the party. I find 2nd gear very impressive, 3rd on up less so.

Yeah, make sure traction control is ALL THE WAY off by holding the button. Even in "MDM" mode it shuts down power way too much. Also make sure you oil temp is over 160F.

Mine felt slow for a while and actually had faulty charge-pipe.

If you want to really be sure, you can get on a dyno.

How did you come to find out your charge pipes were faulty?

Get the car dynoed to ease your mind, or get the dealer to clear adaptations. I did both, dyno numbers were impressive, will keep the M3 V8 in check, and i still feel the car is slow...cant wait for Cobb.

The E46 power keep rising through to the higher revs and this car doesn't. Sweet spot is between 3.5k-6k for stock cars. 2nd gear pull can feel slow, but I found 1st extremely usable compare to the 135i. If you are coming into a slow corner, it might be worth while to shift back to 1st. Overboost doesn't come in at all in 2nd, but it comes in 3rd, 4th and 5th.

I came from a 135i, and found the power a pleasant surprise. However, I have a ESS that gives it more room to move where the rev range becomes even more usable.

Also, traction control comes in early if you don't have MDM on as mentioned, and also make sure you have the M button on as well for faster response - it makes a huge difference.

Second gear is THE MOST impressive gear on this car. Either get it checked or get your nannies right.

If you want a louder exhaust, get some downpipes and an aftermarket option. You'll get your wish

I moved from a 335 with about 450 tq at the crank, so I too have felt a Little under powered.

Now, go out there and put your foot in it and you can't get the power you have to the ground and the 1m pulls harder than you think but you can always get a tune on it.

Personally I am really excited about the car so far and just waiting on winter to be over.

OP - as for you wanting a more deeper exhaust note... I think you should look into getting a N55 mid pipes. Its a good mod for better throttle response and more power and a deeper burble/tone.

Any guesstimates as to how much power you gained from swapping in the N55 midpipes?

I have still yet to install mine. lol But others here have said it felt like 20 HP or so. I think the biggest gains are in better turbo spool up, when going WOT and a much deeper nicer sound from the exhaust.

No way you are going to see 20hp from a mid pipe. I have a non catted mid pipe, and the sound isn't that much different.

The posts praising second gear, the overall engine performance, and the exhaust are the more correct of the debate here.

The engine does have a different feel than BMW's NA engines. That does not mean it has less power. It does mean that the power it has should be handled differently.

The 1M does run out of torque a little above 5,000, although it will keep trying.
The E46 (and E9X) M3 doesn't have any torque until about 3500.

The exhaust on both cars sounds its best when both cars are being pushed at their best.

I have both in my garage right now. They are definitely two different machines.

I have both as well and my 1m is ESS flashed and feels very fast. The e46 m3 is an absolute joy bone stock at 155 000 km , feels brand new!!!
