RPMs

I found myself cruising at 3,000 RPM for a while, on a recent drive. (Engine response is obviously much better in this range vs at 2,000 or 2,500.)

Is there any harm in holding the RPMs around 3,000, as long as the oil temp stays normal (say, below 250)?

Fuel economy bro. Why on earth would you cruise at 3k rpm?

I can't see why keeping revs at 3K RPM is an issue for the oil - you are nowhere near the redline... oil temp will stabilize based the cooling available due to climate and unless the coolant is taxed, it should never be an issue. Gas is going down the drain though at that RPM

agreed. if anything it prevents sludge formation

if you're cruising at 6k RPM that would be a different story but 3K is nothing..

I'm going to try this. I would have thought the noise after a while cruising at this rpm would get irritating

Only the one time. Car was sounding good. Better at 3K than at 2-2.5K.

Thanks for the replies! It's good to know that the option is there.

And, believe it or not, I averaged around 19-20 MPG's while in that RPM range! I was going between 4th and 5th gears, at highway speeds.

i drive in that range often on the freeway during my commute and i average about 20-23mpg depending on if i'm in 5th more or 4th. The only reason i stay in 4th sometimes is when there is a lot of passing going on...otherwise i'm fine in 5th.

to be honest it's pretty stupid for fuel economy but if i wanted fuel economy i'd be driving a hybrid!

i almost NEVER use 6th...lol

If you cruise at 160kmh you don't have much choice.

That's an incredibly clear photo with zero shake or blurr given how fast the car was going.

I'd be wetting my pants and have a death grip on the wheel at that speed!

How did you capture it?

I was driving with my foot to the floor and the speed limiter kicking in. Thats 250 kph(155mph) for cars with M-Sport. Non M Sport cars are limited to 210 kph.

I just used my small Canon IXUS point and shoot during a bright day to take that pic. One handed on the wheel and the other with the camera and resting on the steering wheel/center pad/airbag.

Btw... even though the speedo says 250 kph(my car is a US spec car here in Germany)... when I used it with my TomTom the real speed was 240 kph.

After I got my car's DME sw flashed to 380PS and 520Nm with an "open" V-Max, I have seen speeds as high as 285 kph via my Navi/TomTom. Thats about 6,400 rpm's in 6th gear. I know a few times I have seen 6,500 or 6,600 rpms... but I do not know what speed that is. I would think around ~290 or 293 kph. Things happen too quickly at those speeds to take a photo!

Not to thread jack but here are two videos of driving fast at night. These are more shaky though.

My original point for the OP is that not to worry about driving these cars hard. They ARE designed for the rigors of the Autobahn. Even when I drive that fast my oil temps rarely break the 255'F mark. and then once you slow down the oil temps go back down to 240'F range. These cars are strong runners.

Driving around in Germany/Autobahns (videos inside!)

Awesome video Dackel!

However, if the car is meant to be driven hard, why does it often go into limp mode after 20 minutes of hard driving on the track? I've been told it has something to do with the turbo pressure but have never figured out a solution.

Actually now that I am use to driving fast over here... 250 kph seems slow. Its when your going 270ish of more that things get very interesting.
