Does anyone know if someone makes black chrome kidney grills for the 1-series? Not sure if it would look good, but they would match the black chrome exhaust tips which I like a lot.

Just curious. For those that are having a hard time with the DIY on the grills, do you have a 09' model? Maybe there's a difference between the 09' and 08' models.

I have a 2010 135i that I just bought last week. I followed the DIY on the first page. I did not have a right angle tool, so I made my own with a shish kabob skewer. I had no trouble removing and replacing the kidney grilles. In all, it took me about 30 min, 15 of those minutes were spent trying to figure out what would make a good right angle tool. Here is an iPhone pic of my results.

I used a star bit, I dont recall what size. Those screws are not torqued down very hard to begin with, at least in my case they weren't. I do recommend getting some torx bits though. They're good to have as many vehicles, especially German ones, use those.

Thanks for the DIY. only took about 20 min and 10 of that was spent making myself a right angle tool out of a fork. (yeah, I'm that cheap)
as far as the t30 screws, i just used a small flat head screwdriver, no problem. all i can say is be patient and don't rush or you will snap a plastic clip and be screwed. also i left the original grill in and only changed out the chrome outer piece, think it looks pretty sweet

Just did it yesterday on my 09. Took about 10 minutes on the first one, and about 2 minutes on the second one. Finding the right tool helped, and they I just had to tug hard while using the tool. But the writeup was very helpful. Thanks.

Thanks for the guide. It made it really easy and I was done in about 40 minutes, inluding the time I took to bend a coat hanger into a tool to get to the clips. I will post pictures soon.

thanks for the DIY
I did not have a right angle tool (that would have made the job easy) I just fit my hand down and used a finger from beneath the lower clips from the rear...it was not easy, but it can be done |

I did mine the other day - I'm paranoid about getting any little scratch, even on parts you can't see or don't normally look at. I ended up taking the rubber off the top just so I had some more room to work with when pulling the top of the grill area forward. I used the L tool to undo the bottom clips and pull out, then moved to the top w/ a small screwdriver. After I undone one of the top clips, the thing pretty much came out easily.
It's funny how that side clip don't do ishhh

nice and easy with the right angle tools. I used the chrome inner slats with space gray painted outer ring... will post picks soon
edit: here oh and I got the same "Hook and pick set" as the OP but from amazon for about $6-7... I had free shipping cause i was ordering other things so it was a good deal Not sure if I want to keep it as is or go ahead and put the black slats back in... at this point, with the inner slats chrome, the change is almost unrecognizable but very clean.....any thoughts? so i also followed the first set of DIY instructions and installed in 30 mins. A good part of that time was spent going slow since i've never done any DIY car work before. I think the hardest part for me was removing the side clips closest to the lights. Pain in the but to find the clip when compared to the tops and bottoms.

Thank you! I installed my black grills (a Christmas gift) this morning in about 20 min with a long flat screwdriver. The only thing I'll point out that was a bit vague for my limited mind:
"With the lower clips undocked, you can begin working on the upper clips. In order to access the clips, you want to pull up on the bumper trim and if you look in from the engine compartment, you will see the three clips. Use a flat blade screwdriver or the pointed end of the pick to push the clips down." What I found is that you just have to pull up the upper trim piece a lot - like, more than you think at first - but there is enough play that it gives JUST enough that you can squeak in a screw driver and push down on the clips. Then the grills pop right out. No need to deal with the side clips. I did it all without harming anything. And I actually found the bottom clips came up easily with a large screw driver - just slide the flat head in next to the tab and very carefully turn it clockwise, it frees the tab enough and the bottom slides out. And you all know BMW sells the pair of all black grills for $84, minus the BMWCCA discount. Pretty rad deal and they're OEM. Merry Christmas, m |
