Resonation Solved and the drone lessened
I think I have the resonation solve and made good progress on lessening the drone. I started by putting more of the Damplifier in the trunk, on the muffler heat shield and under the back seat. I cut two strips 4"X12" and cut that into smaller pieces and put it in multiple places on the heat shield by the muffler. Next I cut two 9"X12" pieces for under the back seat. I cut those two piece once again for a total of four pieces under the seat. The remainder went in the trunk area. I have a total of about 5 sq/ft of Damplifier in the car for a total weight of 1.75 lbs.
Just to make sure I had it fixed. I put two full sheets of Overkill in the trunk. Overkill is a closed cell foam mat. Total installed was 18 sq/ft or 2.35 lbs. Let me say the car is much quieter, in fact, it is too quiet. I'm going to remove the Overkill tomorrow and see what the effect is. I wish there was another 1M in Memphis so I could see what the Overkill would do by its self. Edit: See post 130. The Done still comes and goes. Last edited by 1M Fan; 10-19-2011 at 07:30 AM.. Yeah, I think that using all that "Overkill" was probably overkill.
Seriously, if you've solved the drone problem, you will be one of my favorite people. Ever! |

Thx 1M Fan for testing ... That is exactly what i thought when i reported that here last week. The drone can be reduced/eliminated with some noise reduction mat. My parts arrived today.......looking forward to get rid of the drone.

It should still be possible to manufacture an exhaust that does not drone, without implementing "noice killer" in the trunk.
For my M3 E46 I had a canadian exhaust - Scorza, zero drone and a glorious sound. I hope they will make a product for the 1M. It is really sad/bad that no company still has created a drone free exhaust for the 1M, even though the companies are well known and has a good reputation. I drove to work today without the Overkill and the drone is back. It is considerably less and lower pitched with the other sound control. I'll put in one sheet of the overkill and see how that works.

Obioban's car is sick. I have been drooling over it, on M3forum.net for years!

Mine still drones, as much today (4,500 miles) as it did the day I got it.
Mind you I rather like it! So much so, I find that I don't listen to HK or DAB much! |

Excuse me OP, so sorry that you happen to not like it. Hope this thread yields a resolution. Yet, let me say: Drone Shmone! Both windows are opened more frequently because the car sounds that good, especially near highway constructions, bridges and tunnels. With temperatures declining, the AC is making over hours. |

Imho the largest part of the drone is caused by the last, main silencer. I have a new, street legal exhaust under my 1M, mainly because I didn't like the way the stock exhaust looks. Ok, call me picky. But btt... no more drone. Well, hardly any. My exhaust is a tad louder, but in car, you have a lot less noise and especially no drone. Bad thing is...
...I liked my drone.

like the drone as well - it really is more of an exhaust note imo drone seems to lessen when you accelerate - so next time i am doing 160kmh on the bundesstraße (highway?) i tell the officer i just wanted to get rid of the drone

I have the street-legal, stainless steel prototype they (http://www.lightweight-titanauspuffanlagen.de/) made for the 1M. Beautifully made!
No pics or soundfiles yet, but I will.

I put the Overkill back in and drove to work this morning. The drone is back. It seems to come and go. It looks like a new exhaust may be the best solution. At least the resonation within the car is gone.

What were to conditions that you posted that there was no drone at all? How could the drone come back after the "overkill" was put in, maybe you were not driving it on load (note: it will only drone on load).
