Thing that stinks is that now there are lots of H8/Grp49 agm batteries on the market, all around 110Ah, but agm batteries can only be coded to 90Ah which is a fundamental issue and drives you to a smaller battery. Iirc you can code in a 110Ah flooded battery.

But I thought 1 hr was pretty good, though I don't know how long it takes to load, recode and write back to the car. Was under the impression it was a fairly slow process...
If it goes smoothly it is well under an hour. Should be less than half an hour. But things don't always go smoothly.

Probably a dumb question but...if you code for a new battery, will it overwrite your DME if you have a COBB tune?

No it will not

I have a cobb tune, its basically a parameter change and not a flash

Its basically changing an option in your computer, best way I can describe it

What do you think about the free flash tune? Is the battery charging strategy included in the bins?

I am also not sure about the COBB tune, because while part of the tune are the maps, which certainly do not have anything to do with the charging strategy, the first install of the COBB overrides your current programming with their bin as far as I know.

I'm having an email conversation with the folks at BT, and they tell me (quotes inserted by me) "The tool does not yet support the battery registration on the N55 engine.".

Rats...

You might want to look at BMWhat. I think it is less expensive and does battery registration. It appears to be easier to use than NCSExpert and related files. Probably cheaper too.

True, can we use an optima battery and code it?

All registration is to tell the dme you put a new battery in so it can reset the way the battery is charged just like throttle adaptations basically.

As the battery gets older and cant hold as much charge the dme compensates for that, it doesn't actually code the battery

If you change to an optima you defiantly have to register it with the dme because from the factory the charging profile is set for a lead acid battery and the optima is a AGM bettery and has a slower charging rate, if you don't do this it, it will kill your optima battery rather quickly.

Hope this helps

Understood, if i go with a lead acid battery do you have any recommendations it costs $300+ from the dealership, is there a interstate or ac delco battery that fits physically and can be used performance wise.

I use a AGM Duracell battery and hasn't let me down yet

The reason it cost 300 for the stealership as they charge you for coding at a rate of 247 dollars per hour here in oz anyway

No matter what battery you get, you still have to code the dme to reset the charging curve.

This has been said many times but there are one or two steps for coding a replacement battery. If you don't change the size or type, it is a one step - registering. If you change the size or type, you have to tell the car that which is an additional step. With NCSExpert, the registering is in Tool32 if I remember right and NCSExpert for changing the battery size/type.

To find a compatible battery, you can just go to a car parts place. They all have compatible batteries. The dealer is a source of coding if you are willing to pay their price but they are not at all necessary to get a battery that fits.

Thanks, is battery ah rating the only thing that needs to be known when coding a new battery?

Is it safe to use those Solar panel charger / maintainer ? Or do you have to code it too?

No you don't but make sure you have the right charging controller with your solar panel that suits the battery your using

Most solar panels charge controllers are for lead acid batteries not agm but some are switchable to suit either battery
