usb connection issues...
ive searched the forum and couldnt find an answer to my issue..
i connected my ipod thru the usb..as soon as it finished "reading" and my ipod became highlighted on the screen i clicked on it to go thru my ipod via the idrive. as soon as i did that, my ipod was disconnected. i removed the usb connection and tried again a few times with the same results.. i also tried a newer usb cord with no luck. any help would be much appreciated..thanks all. |

Try turning the iPod completely off and turn it back on then try again. Worked for me. Then plug it back into the car and be patient and let it read the iPod completely before you try to listen to music.

That didnt work. It will initially connect, but as soon as I push the idrive button to get into my iPod, it disconnects. After a few minutes it will connect again- and as soon as I push the idrive button, it disconnects again. Any ideas??? Or off to service???

I just recently got a used '09 135i. I am having problems getting the radio to recognize my iPhone. I have the iPod/usb integration but haven't gotten it to work. Any ideas?

I tried another cable and that didn't work. Plugged in my wife's iPod- worked fine. I think my iPod is messed up- (have 3rd generation nano)-must have damaged it at the gym. Will by a new one- I think I'll go for the iPod classic..

F*&%^ng iPod Interface
I have the same exact issue. I have a 160GB classic, and whether I use an Apple USB cable or aftermarket, it flips out.
For the most part, I leave my iPod in the car, hooked up. It seems to become troublesome whenever I take it out to re-organise lists or download/add new tracks. I plug it in, then start the vehicle. When I select Audio and then iPod it acts like it's scanning the iPod for a moment, then stops and defaults to the radio. I tried re-booting the iPod (holding the menu and center buttons until it reboots). It then re-connects, shows the Roundel and says BMW ComBox Connected and okay to disconnect. Then when I try to access it via Audio and iPod it does the same thing OR it will say connect USB. Annoying as hell. It's happened about 3 times now. The only thing that seems to mitigate the problem is waiting (5-10 minutes) after I hook the updated iPod back up to the cable after any updates, and then trying to access it. I'm not sure, but it seems like the combox can't handle the new lists that quickly (that's my theory) and it just takes a crap. https://discussions.apple.com/thread...rt=15&tstart=0

Mine is so screwy too. Have a 160g classic as well and. Sometimes it won't even register that it is connected. Other times it will show connected, let me look at my playlists and songs but when I try to play one it doesn't work.
Bluetooth through my phone works great, but getting pretty fed up with the ipod through usb. It has been this way since I took possession of the car. Any pointers would be nice. |

No, I am going to try turning it all the way off and resetting it. I am going to be in the car for ~500 miles this weekend, it would be nice if the ipod worked

I gave up on using my old iPods in my cars. Didn't like the hassle of removing my phone from my pocket and hooking it up either. I use the BlueTooth for phone calls but for music, I just don't see the advantage of using your phone or iPod. I find that thumb drives are the best option for me. I don't have iDrive and the menu navigation is instant and quite easy. They read extremely fast, they are cheap and I can fit almost my entire iTunes library on on 32GB drive. The BMW deck has no problem with the AAC files and the Artist/album info pops up right away. It's far less likely to draw attention to would be thieves than an iPod with the cable hanging out. I just leave it in the car plugged in under the armrest. Not as susceptible to heat like an iPod...etc. You can get a 32GB drive for $18.50 right now.

Metak - how are you setting up the USB stick? Is it considered an "additional device" by Mac standards? I've ever set up a stick to sync with my iTunes library. I have plenty of USB sticks floating around, so it wouldn't be an issue for me. Admittedly, my 160GB iPod is older (probably almost 2 years old), but I like the fact that it has ample storage.

Here's what you do: - insert your USB drive - go to My Computer and open the flash drive. - then go to My Documents - open My Music - open iTunes library - select the Artist/album files you want. - drag and drop into the flash file The write speed is much slower than the read speed, this is normal. No need to convert to mp3 or anything. On your deck(non-iDrive) you just select USB option all the way to the right and then you can select Artist-Album-Song, whichever you prefer.
