Interesting discovery: No CA, but car senses when fob is close!
For people without CA, try this.
Get in your car and place your fob close to the fob slot..."beep" and a key sign appears. Move it far, key sign goes off...bring it close again..."beep" ... (is this using RFID technology?) Now, could I use this "feature" to make my own type of CA? basically keep a dummy key in there all the time. Something just big enough to push on the side buttons of the slot. Then all i have to do is bring my real key close to the dash and push start!! |

Well if you are going to have to put your real key/fob close to the dash you'd just negated any benefit you intended to gain in the first place....I don't suppose that is the whole purpose of CA, its for you to access the car without taking out the key.

i have noticed that too...but if you are going to bring your normal key close you might as well stick it in the slot....

If you notice carefully, I think you'll find this occurs only when your FOB is very close to touching the FOB Slot, like in a position to go in the FOB Slot. This happens to me too but I guess you're not gonna wanna keep holding the FOB in one hand while driving with the other (if you don't want to put it in the slot). The reason it beeps is to remind you that your key is still in the car while your door is open.

It is available as a special order on the 325, my salesman says 400CAD charge for the special order + 750CAD CA price = 1150CAD on a 325.

All modern cars have this. But the transponders needs to be very close to each other. Ive tried this on a FIAT Ducato. Ive put just the key in (without the black key-thingy, the key was broken). And then when putting the black key 'holder' close to the key slot the cars code unit unlocks.
Its not RFID |

Also many tags work only at the distance of inches and some even require physical contact with the reader...

There's no reason the fob shouldn't work forever w/o battery replacement, at least the RFID portion of it. Hitting a button to unlock the "old-fashioned way" is another story.

I special ordered CA on my 325i which is coming in May. $1150 was a hard pill to swallow but from what I hear, it will be worth it down the road.

Right, it is RFID and the fob itself has a battery so it can also send your door lock/unlock signals to the car. Note that the spare/emergency key is just a small bit of plastic... If you place your emergency key (not in it's holder fob) by the slot you'll get the same display and dinging.

Talking with our RFID export at work his best guess it that the FOB is a combination of a tranmitter and "passive" RFID tag. The transmitter to open the doors, and the RFID tag to send the "unlock" signal to the car once it is excited by the receiver in the dash..
