Winter tires down south in Oklahoma City

Wife just got her 128i convertible and she's concerned about winter tire performance during the OK winter. Our weather is unpredictable, usually three or four significant snow/ice events separated by occaisional winter mix and an equal amount of mild days. This is her daily driver and she spends a lot of time on the road.

Is it worth it to have a winter tire that might wear prematurely during the mild spells? Is there a good compromise "all/season" tire that I should look at?

I have two sets of wheels and a well stocked garage so switching would be no problem. The stockers are 205/55/16 Continental ContiProContact Runflats. The alteranate set is 17" type 262 BMW factory 128i sport wheels.

I think I'd eventually like to have the 17's on for the majority of the year and the 16's for winter. Right now the 16's have brand new Conti's and the 17's have half worn Goodyear NCT RFTs.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Since your Contis are all-seasons, why not try them this winter? But definitely avoid the NCTs in snow, ice or sub-freezing temps.

The Continental DWS A/S tire is getting consistently good reviews for winter weather traction and has high tread wear rating.

I couldn't agree more.

What's your wife's life worth?

If you have winter, get winter tires. Easy decision. They cost less, typically, than your insurance deductible.

Granted, the situation you are in with respect to the 16" (new tires) and 17" (used tires) is not ideal, as I would agree, the winters go on the 16" wheels, but worst case, you simply sell off those 16" tires to bring in some money.

When we do getsnow/ice here in Oklahoma, we get it good. I'd highly reccomend some snows for the 16's and sell the Conti's (or maybe work into a swap - see if any local shop will give you anything for 'em). My car rarely left the garage this last winter -
