BMW 128i vs 328i

I'm trying to decide whether to buy the 328i or the 128i . I'm leaning towards the 1. But I can't seem to find any in my area, used. There are a few for 38k+. Aren't they 29k base? I went on BMWusa.com and built one... added auto, and power seats.. came out to 32k. Can I go to a dealership and order for the same price? When will there be more 128i used available? thanks

I have driven them both extensively, and regardless they are both great cars, and nothing short of pleasing to drive.

It really depends on you needs...

You should look here for information on dealer cost. You should be able to easily buy for list price (what you get on BMWUSA's website) but you also should be able to buy for less than that. Something like $500 to $1000 over dealer cost. You may have to visit several dealers (by internet or in person) to get that sort of price. If you buy new, you may also want to consider European delivery (sort of like a BMW paid vacation to Europe to drive your first miles on your bimmer) and Performance Center delivery (your car is sent to the BMW performance center in Greer, SC and BMW puts you up at the Greenville Marriott, buys you dinner and breakfast, and gives you a little track time on delivery day). Not all dealers do European delivery. Any dealer can do PC delivery, however. European delivery isn't the normal deal for the dealer. The dealer makes the margin over the lower European invoice cost that you negotiate with them but they do not get the incentive payments they normally get based upon how many cars they sell. PC delivery costs the dealer nothing however.

Good Luck.

Jim

You are too young to drive an automatic. You can do that later when you have let yourself go

My friend taught me how to drive manual on his VW gti, and it got annoying after a few minutes... I hate driving for 5 seconds and having to downshift and then shift again. Then using 2 feet to use the brakes. I don't know. Why not just use tiptronic? Whenever I drive my moms X5, I use tiptronic. And when it gets annoying I just put it in D

I'd check insurance, and whatnot, and go drive them both, and then see what hits home. The 128 is a super nice car, and 328 is simply one of the most naturally balanced 4 doors, I have ever driven. The tranny's are what make these cars, but they both pull super hard!!!

I've driven the 328i.. When X5 gets serviced. I love how it drives. The 128i is faster, right? And has better handling? I also want something different. So many people around here have the 328i; probably because it's a great car

I'll tell ya, I had many an awesome experience in that thing. There was an essentially unused drive-in movie theater a few miles from the private school I went to in 11th/12th grade. Just having a car at all, and being a day student, was pretty awesome. But having that place to motor over to pretty much any time, with some pals, or a girl...

Oh man... Good ol' high school.

Being the owner of a 128, and having driven three different 328 loaners, I can safely say that a 128 with sport suspension is a decidedly better drive than the 328. Everyone has their own subjective experience, I suppose, but to me it's not even close. Go for the 128.

Last gen (01-05) honda civic ex manual trans, even the si if you like, learn how to drive (cheaply, reliably) and come back when you're ready- seriously, unless you have a trust fund.

Well kind of... I have 10k saved. I already have spot for a job when I get the car. about 250$ on weekends. And I also sell stuff on ebay for friends and get 100$ average per month . My dad doesn't live with me, so my mom talked to him to split it with her. I was hoping to get a used 128i... but I can't find any. Any idea when there will be more available? UNDER 30k

I had a 328 loaner the last 2 days while my 135i gets software upgrades, it feels like I'm driving a buick

the dash and overall feel, make it feel like something my dad would drive, this car had the auto with sport pack, I really hate the dash, it reminds me of a big old buick

The 1 series has been in the US for less than two years, so you won't start seeing more used 128's until people start turning in their leases or decide to trade-in/sell their cars. I'm sure you're also aware that the 1 series is also a low volume seller compared to the 3 series.

Regarding finances and being a new 16 year old driver, you should take a read through this thread from a previous 16 year old. It has lots of good advice about young drivers and finances. Generally, the consensus is to not blow all your money on a new(ish) car that you would struggle to afford, say if you lost your job. This of course, doesn't mean you have to buy a POS as a first car. There are plenty of nice used, affordable, fun cars out there that many of us would be happy to suggest if you are curious (many older used BMW's for example). Whatever car(s) you are considering, don't forget to check the insurance rates on them. Being that you are 16, insurance certainly won't be cheap.

how about saving for college so you do not graduate with a pile of loans to pay back? You really do not want to get into $20k of debt at the age of 16.

Enjoyment is difficult to defer when you're young (heck it's not easy as you get older either), but this is good advice. The folks I know who managed to get ahead without lots of blood, sweat and tears, were able to start off without any huge educational (or other) debt. Hey, in five or six years you'll be able to get an M3!
