Just got the dinger today saying my oil level is at minimum. When i purchased the car 1.5months and 3000 miles ago, it was at full. No idea what oil was it in, i have to assume its BMW branded oil. What is average or normal for these cars? I know on my Subaru, i could go 5k+ without having to add oil, and i used a pretty robust oil (Rotella T6 5W-40) that didnt shear and break down like M1 5w-30 does.

If your oil was at full after an oil change, you shouldn't have to be adding any oil to these engines between 15000 mi changes.

However, the original oil may not have been set at the right level or when you checked, it could have been on a non-level surface, which does cause variation in the measurement. For the case where that happens and the measurements are wrong, I do carry around a quart in the trunk for a week after oil changes.

There are a bunch of oils that are OK for the e82, but I usually stick with 5w-40 redline or royal purple synthetics.

I find it hard to believe that any turbocharged motor doesn't consume oil in some fashion in 15k miles.

The amount burned compared to the 6.9 quarts you have to dump in is negligible. I've never had an issue with any loss of oil on the in car readout and the only time I've ever had to fill it was when I underfilled during an oil change.

I spoke with the service advisor and he said that 1qt every 750 miles is ACCEPTABLE.

That is absurd!!

Maybe it's based on usage, but I have added oil a few times since new. I'd say about 2 or 3 quarts in 7500 miles since new. I track the car frequently so maybe the harder you drive it the more it burns oil. I tend to be proactive since I got the first warning and add oil when its in the low end.

I usually burn about 1 quart every 5000 miles, but by around that time is when I usually change my oil anyways.

Yes, that is what most of the German car makers say is the max oil consumption. It's 1L per 1K kms.

I lost about 3/4 quart over 7500 miles when I did a few autocrosses. I don't seem to use any when I do not autocross, even if I drive the car hard.

The difference is high RPM usage. On an autocross it makes a lot of sense to stay in 2nd gear even if you run out of power past 6k. My experience is high RPM running eats oil.

I had roughly the same experience with my previous car, an STI. Even with a big turbo swap and whatnot, it wouldn't really eat oil unless I was revving past 5k.
