Buying a car out of state

I bought my E90 out of state (in VA, I live in NJ).

They said they will take care of the DMV things and mail my plates to me.

At the present time I have temp VA plates and a 1 year VA inspection sticker.

Question:
When they send me the plates do they also send the NJ Inspection sticker (4 year is standard with all new cars in NJ)? Or am I required to go to the DMV and get the car inspected myself?

Thanks in advance with the help, as I never purchased a car out of state before.

If you go to the DMV on your own to register the car, or if the dealer is doing this for you, then you get what's called a 'yellow card'. Then all you do is go right thru inspection (without any inspecting), show them this card, and get a 4-year sticker! How cool is that?

I registered my car myself 'cause it was E.D.
Just curious, what is sales tax in VA?

You should have asked to register it on your own.
Could've saved you 3% sales tax if you registered it in VA first, then transferred the registration to NJ. Plus no inflated DMV charges from the dealer (if any).

Maybe not. I believe you have to have SOME sort of nexus to the "out of state" state in order to register your car there, i.e. military, domicile, etc. before you cam register there. Otherwise, I'd have ALL of my cars registered in FL (as I used to be able to do in the Navy) and pay (at the time) NO sales tax!

Well, you are supposed to be a resident.
My response to that? Define resident. If my company or Itznin's company sends me on business to VA for six months, would I not be "residing" in Va? Its really that simple. Its a free country. There is no border patrol in the U.S. between states. If I want to shack up in a hotel in VA for a year, I'm entitled. And if I happen to need to buy a new car while I'm there, then so be it.

Wouldn't you have to establish residency there first. (Change permanent home address, license, etc.)

In other words, be forced to take public transportation before you finish moving to that State? Or worse, drive around with an unregistered vehicle?

Yes, the DMV can give you a hard time about it. However, if YOU ultimately decide to live in Virginia, or are residing there on business, or are staying with Virginian friends for x amount of time, then you have every right to register your car there. If that's where you bought it.

Edit: There's no law that says you must OWN property in a particular state in order to register your car there.
