For what it's worth, DTC is OFF initially. You have to turn it ON...and it will turn back off when you turn off the car.
when you start the car Traction Control is On. It prevents wheel spin. when DTC is enabled you can spin the tires.

Thats why when you start the car and drop the clutch it cuts power and the traction light blinks. Because traction control is On and its preventing wheel spin. If traction control is off then you can spin tires.

But what's the difference between TC and DTC?

correct, when u start ur car the yellow DTC letters cannot be seen between speedo and rev counter, press it and the yellow DTC letters can be seen between speedo and rev counter which means it is now off and you can now spin them up.

Please tell me what you think after reading this page from the pdf manual.
Is DTC on or off by default?
When the yellow DTC letters show up in the display, does that mean it is on or off?

It's not that hard, fellas...
Please, RTM. Notice I nicely left out the F.

If you try to peel out without touching that button u wont be able to. If you try with DTC off you'll be able to do maybe one complete wheelspin, and if you do it with DSC and DTC OFF you can burn out all you want!! good luck
parachute, can you please elaborate on how you were able to peel up the rubber under the center console? Maybe a DIY with pics! I'd like to get my monster cable low profile cables out of the way. Thanks! Oh, and I think this DSC/DTC thing has been argued over several times before. Let's all agree to disagree maybe?

Hello

There are actually quite a few of us South Africans on the forum.

Maybe your 325i was even built here
Check if the 7th last digit of your VIN is a N, if it is, then the car was built here at Rosslyn outside Pretoria

I dont know why there is confusion

There are 2 sets of Software

When you start the car the software set called DSC is active.
This set has full traction control, corner brake control, anti spin control ect ect ect

Press the DTC button and the 2nd set of software is activated.
The cluster now shows DTC to show you that the DTC software is now active
This allows some wheelspin and some tail out actoin ect ect

Then you can turn everything off

If you disagree with the top you better tell BMW their training manuals are wrong and they need to retrain all their technical staff at all their dealers

DTC is DSC with a few functions turned off or modified

So when you switch on the car you have DSC
Press the DTC button and you get some software switched off and some modified ( basically DTC = partial DSC)

Hold it in and it turns off
I knew you would chime in on this topic...

So let's get this right, when you push the engine on/off button, only DSC is activated. And pushing the DTC button turns the engine off? AAAhhhh sooo confusing!

oh WOW.

I feel totally RETARDED. why? I read every single post in this thread and I still don't get it.

this is what I understand so far.

1. Keyfob in, engine start button pressed. DSC is ON. DTC is OFF.
2a. Press the DTC button once, DSC is OFF. DTC is ON. (or is it that DSC and DTC is both turned on?)
2b. Press and hold the DTC button, DSC/DTC is OFF.

*DSC is basically, "maximazed" traction control with stability control.
*DTC is traction control, which allows greater degree of wheel slippage than DSC.

You got it right. Except DSC is always on unless you hold the DTC button for several seconds. DTC is just a special program of DSC.

Parachute: wrt tunnels...are you referring to the center console as in on the console (on non-idrive cars) or the arm rest compartment. I checked and I really couldn't find the space of much use, sure I can tuck some cable slack here and there, but the rubber tray wouldn't be entirely flush

Just found out about the driving with no key insert feature/trick on non-CA cars...pretty cool
