Will you mod your 1M?
There is an ongoing debate on the wisdom of modding such a rarified breed as the 1M.
Some people make changes that they think BMW should have designed in the first place. Others treasure a bone stock model as the only true collectible form. What is your position? And if you have chosen to mod, what's your plan of action? .

The 1M needs some performance mods.

I already have!
I strongly agree with preserving the 1M. It is TRULY a collectible, truly a jewel. Yesterday was super confirmation of that (...) However, everything I've done, is reversible. And I've kept all the OEM pieces nice and packaged. My OEM hood is in a box, protected. So is my trunk and everything else I've modded. In a way, down the road, the car is better preserved since these pieces won't suffer the damage. I guess my stance is, as long as its reversible. |

Keep it bone stock for me. This car is just too limited in numbers to mod. IMO.
I have a 2005 WRX STi that is my DD/Track and Winter driving car which is modded, Dyno Stage 2 tune, Turbo back Exhaust, suspension, springs, bars etc. and will keep for these reasons. To each his own however.

If I had a 1M I would go to town on it. I'd do everything I have done to my 135i to it and then some. I would still appreciate a bone stock 1M as its an amazing car from factory. It doesn't really need anything else, except a tune.

Pure stock for me. Maybe a little suede lining the plastic bins inside, but otherwise I waited so long for what M had designed, I don't want to alter it. Besides, what do I need more of? For the road this car already has MORE of everything I could need

I think replacing items that require eventual replacement due to wear and tear(brakes, exhaust, shocks etc.) with upgraded aftermarket items(not original) is fine. Who's gonna turn their nose up at a tastefully modded E30 M3 like this? JMO

EVERY production car is a compromise.
Even with enthusiasts in mind, these cars had to be able to meet certain performance goals, while balancing their real world drive-ability for the average consumer. I would love to lower mine, improve the looks, as well as the handling. But we put a lot of miles on our cars, and my wife drives the M every day... When I hear the right exhaust in person, I will consider that upgrade. Then possibly pipes, FMIC, and a tune. If funds were not an issue, I would go with CF hood, roof, and trunk. |

That made me think a bit and I just realized that in 30+ years of owning cars and driving, I have only made three total changes to a car that I did not use specifically for autocross or the track (not including replacing worn out items). Hmmmm!!

I will do things as the car wears, once the service is no longer free. I heavily modded a car once, and it became a never ending quest to find mods to compensate for the other mods. My last two cars have had brake pad and brake fluid updates for track duty, but otherwise stayed stock. I am sure once I start going to the track, I will come up with a few practical "must do" things. |

I prefer my "collectible" M-Cars to be stock. Now, I believe that the term "collectible" is bandied about way too liberally when it comes to cars, due to rabid pride that any true auto-phile has in the blood.
My '02 M Roadster is bone stock and pristine, save the Clearmask, Dinan front strut, and the "passenger eject" cigarette lighter insert. It hasn't helped or hurt the value. My 1M only has the black grilles but as soon as Dinan releases their mod list, I'm going to agonize over whether or not I should upgrade what I already think is a brilliant, brilliant car. |
