"Styling could use more aggression"
Now that's the first time I've heard that when talking about the 1M styling.

They liked it a lot. I guess being a motoring journalist the author felt the need to write something negative and pushed it a bit. It reads as a quite sincerely written text imo.

Good review. Funny the generational comment of Gen X to Y about it being a "marker" car. That's what the E30 M3 is/was to me!
Definately don't want a huge spoiler on it, glad they skipped that part. Thanks for posting. |

Honestly, I think the 1M, and entire 1-series look more like a pre-bangle traditional BMW than anything else currently in the line-up. Its part of what I love about it.

I feel the same. As a former owner of a 3 series Compact (318ti) I was not that much impressed with the styling when the 1 series appeared around 2004in the hatch form and then when the 1 coupe was launched in 2007/08 it was a whole different story. If you remember BMW was using the resemblance with the 2002ti in all press material and I was thinking from the begining that now they have to make an M car out of it. 135i was fine and it was a close attempt but just fell a bit short, you could just smell that it could be better. Finally there was a car in the BMW lineup resembling the "classical era BMWs". Stylingwise there was nothing wrong other than the pig belly and the sleepy looking headlights which were carried over from the hatch (both are relatively corrected with 1M). What I mean is 1M was always there, waiting someone to give life to it and at the end of the production circle they finally let it happen without much faith I guess.
Henry Moore, the artist once said that the sculpture he made, he did not "create" it but he just saw it lying in the stone. He said he just "took it out". The long story of 1 series or small BMW sedans which ended gloriously with our 1M reminds me his words. |
