Correct me if i'm wrong, but the DTE range is dependent on how much fuel u have left in the tank. Meaning that if you fang it, you're going to fall short of the DTE range? :

The light comes on at a preset level of liters left in the tank (8L and 2L - I think). The range is based on a average of how hard(or lightly) you have been driving for the past 20 minutes or so. That is why the miles or kms left/range varies from one car to the other. Someone posted the exact specs of how the BC calcualtes the range left - a year or two ago. You can try to search for it. |

I used to imagine that I would be seeing a flood of Land Cruiser V8s, V8 utes, etc on the used market as they were traded for diesels but it hasn't happened......yet.
On the LandCruiser V8: I heard a story where a grey nomad couple calculated that the initial difference in cost between a V8 petrol and a turbo diesel was such that it was more economical overall to buy the petrol version for a trip around Oz, even with the lower economy, and sell it after the trip. Interesting that many of the taxis here are Priuses. Get along pretty well too, though that could be the natural tendency of taxi driver's to have a lead foot. Commodores and Falcons seem to be disappearing as Taxis. All in all I'm okay with my 12.5 lts / 100 klm average given the performance. I once did a fuel consumption check against the car's computed consumption and found the car to be about 1lt / 100 klms optimistic. I fail to see why the need to build a misleading algorithm into the system. |

I couldn't care less about fuel prices or fuel economy.

A lot of that tank was spent trying to achieve sideways rather than forward motion, hence 230kms. A couple of tanks ago I nearly got to 500kms.

To some extent neither could I. I chose the cars I drive so I can't complain about fuel economy: however, prices are a different matter. What irks me is the sure knowledge that we are all being gouged by the tacit fuel cartel. I know it's a cartel because of the lack of real competition. Take any run of fuel stations in an area and you will see bugger all difference in price and the moment one changes prices the others respond in kind. What is that, some kind of petroleum telepathy?

We should not forget that Australia has one of the most regulated petroleum production and exploration markets in the world. The amount of regulation is obviously factored into production costs. Regardless, the short term fluctuations are pretty insane. |

Less performance, more fuel consumption, and knowing I'm not giving my car the best? Pass. |

I doubt using 95 in a 130i would have too much of a bad effect compared to a 135i/turbo car?
