I think it's 29 now, and 22 were children.

Sad. Very sad. If I was a parent, I would be devastated if my child in ELEMENTARY school was killed in a school shooting. How can somebody go and kill defenseless children? People that do that kind of shit are seriously sick in the head.

I know this may cause a debate but something has to be done about these school shootings. Schools are not safe, period. I think teachers should be armed and trained to operate a firearm. Imagine if teachers were armed in CT. That guy would not have been able to kill and injure over 50 people in an elementary school. Guns are not bad. People with serious mental problems that have access to guns are what the problem is.

I hate to say this, but as the NRA point this out with the guy in CO who shoot up the movie threat he pick a place where he knew no guns were allowed. School are totally disarmed and are perfect targets for people like this. The people are cowards and they look for defensive people to make their point. You do not see this happen in TX why people will shoot back.

I know my kids schools lock everything down, and it hard to get in, but even with that I have been able to walk in to my kids schools without being challenged so even with all the protection someone bent on destruction will be successful.

I just read they said one complete class room is presently unaccounted for... this is really sick, it sound like he killed entire class of kids.

Terrible for the kids & parents, I can't imagine.

There was a similar incident that happened in China just hours ago. 20 kids injured by a man with a knife.... not killed but injured.

And some are saying we need more guns? Give me a break.

Been watching the news for almost 2 hours now while in complete shock. Its just shocking that such a coward would do this, kill 20+ children.
Just can't imagine how it must feel for the families, it was just a sunny Friday, just 2 weeks from Christmas and other holidays, instead of being happy and celebrating most will now plan funerals. Just seriously sad, my thoughts and prayers go out to all the families at that school especially the families who lost their loved ones.

has anyone heard anything about the shooter? Age, possible motive, or anything? The only thing I have seen is that his mother was a possible target and victim.

Law enforcement sources said that this was a matter of some confusion for investigators: at first, they believed the shooter had been Ryan Lanza, 24, whose mother worked at the school. Based on reports from those sources, the Washington Post and many other news outlets identified Ryan Lanza as the suspected shooter earlier Friday.

But as the afternoon went on, investigators determined Ryan Lanza was not the shooter after all. Instead, one law enforcement source said, the killer was believed to be his brother Adam Lanza, 20. It was unclear where Ryan Lanza was on Friday.

Ryan Lanza, 24, brother of gunman Adam Lanza, 20, tells authorities that his younger brother is autistic, or has Asperger syndrome and a "personality disorder."

Ryan, went to the police and told them his brother had mental issues for a long time.

One of the posters did suggest that teachers be armed & trained to shoot.

He has since edited his post.

The gunman shot his mother who happened to be a teacher there and then proceeded to slaughter her class and a bunch of other adults..but I do believe the mother was the prime target...tragedy.

My sister is a teacher and I have told her that she should keep some kind of defensive weapon with her. A taser would be ideal, but a gun may be necessary. Being trapped somewhere with a gunman and being unarmed is one of my biggest fears.

Quite disturbing. I live in Texas. I carry a gun. Guns can be very dangerous, especially in the wrong hands. I wish teachers would be trained to carry weapons. My mother is a librarian at an elementary school. I called her to make sure she was OK today, even though we are miles away from Connecticut, it's still a good time if not better than any to call your mom and tell her you lover her.

More guns is not the solution to a friggin gun problem. No elementary school teacher armed with a handgun can take down a guy with an assault rifle.

This an extreme case, I would say. But if other teachers were armed, they wouldn't care who he was if their lives are in jeopardy.

Most gun related injuries and deaths are due to accidental discharges. You would really be more comfortable with teachers all across the country being armed, leaving literally hundreds of thousands of guns just lying around schools? What on Earth could possibly be going through your head to reach that conclusion.
