Also the second the last non M BMW to have a LSD from the factory.

E36 318ti Compact Clubsport in '95, spiritual successor to the 318is in a lot of ways.

They made an E46 version too, just only in Europe. When the E90 came about they just called it the 1 series.

E46 version gets the prize for ugliest BMW headlights ever.

I actually like the e46 TI and its pug/bulldog looks, i have seen the car in stock in person too (stock bumpers)
it has some nice lines with the Mtech body styling

I like the rest of it, but I would retrofit the ZHP M-Technic front end immediately to kill that headlight ugliness.

I remember when I used to be in lovvee with the e36 318ti. I wanted one so bad, but I had to get a less than favorable EK Hatch instead, that was of course a pile of junk.

This was my exact logic as well. I track a '97 M3 sedan, and the 128 is nearly identical in terms of power-to-weight. I've had it about a week now, and it's just a wonderful car. Didn't feel the need for a 135i and the complexity/unreliability of the turbos, worse MPG, greater insurance cost, etc.

I'm on a set of DSII's from the E36 for the winter. They have new all-seasons on them, versus the stock wheels with new summer tires. Doesn't look all bad:

I think a lot of us here are former E36 M3 owners. 128i is the closest thing currently being made. Amusingly, the mods are very similar. Much like the S52, the manifold swap is the big power gain.

Next season get proper snows. All seasons don't hold a candle in the winter to them.

Oh, and the 135i gets similar MPG.

I get worse mpg in my 128 than my dad does in his 335i vert.. both 90% highway driving. I get about 26mpg and he gets 29mpg. His is bone stock.

Hah, interesting re: manifold swap. Clearly I have some reading to do.

Yeah, I'm sure I will get proper tires for next year. These tires were $Free and already mounted on the wheels so I figured I'd burn 'em off before dropping even more money on more tires.

There are so many variables at play here, I'm not sure what conclusion you can really make. The N52 is going to do better on MPG all else being equal (which they are not) than the N54 or N55.

Maybe try using cruise more, drive at a lower RPM and lower throttle in general and with a lower acceleration rate. Coast in gear before you get to stop lights and try to not have to come to a complete stop at stoplights by slowing early rather than waiting until you have to slam on the brakes.

Just the two cars side by side down the highway with cruise on you should be better off by a few mpg.

Are you up on maintenance as well?

Both car's are maintained meticulously. I know all the tricks to get the best MPG possible including engine braking before stopping.

I do accelerate more aggressively than he does, but i've never ever had the MPG go above 26mpg on my car, even on 3 hour long drives on the highway cruise control set to 80. Around town it drops down to 20 or so. If i'm hooning, 15.

I drive fast in general. MPG isn't a concern at all for me, It just so happens that my commute is 80 miles of highway round trip. His commute is 120 miles round trip of highway, that also is a factor for him getting better mileage.

I've never seen any evidence of the n52 getting better mileage than the turbo variants in general. If i recall correctly i think the EPA ratings are higher on the 135i than the 128i too.

He is probably going slower. 128i MPG drops dramatically over 65mph.

This is what my 130i does.

on a flat road with cruise set to 120 kph it does this...

After a 598.9 km trip this was the average.

I have to say I staid within the 120 - 130 range but had some 160kph blasts and passes in two way roads. I am lazy to pass that to mpg but it is over 30.

+1

If I cruise at 65-70 I can get 31-32 mpg easy. This summer I did a beach trip from VA to SC and got 28 mpg while constantly cruising at 80+ with the A/C on.

Although I think the roads I drive here in VA are probably much flatter than some of you up north.

It completely falls on its face again around 120mph, and by the time you get up to 130mph-140mph you are into the low teens.
