OT: Euro Car Hire
So I'm going to do a Europe trip in July-Aug-Sep visiting Holland, Germany and the UK.
I want to hire a car from when I land in Amsterdam for a north-south trip of Germany. Anyone got any tips on good value car hire places? I think I want a convertable as it will be summer and then I can see the country at its fullest. Going to be in Germany for about 2 weeks. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Avis, budget, Sixt they are all reputable. My advice is to organize the hire of car from the German or whatever country you will start finish at.
Last year I used Avis, for the second time, but did so from Avis.de using google translator to understand the text etc. they have more and varied cars on their o/s sites than you can get here in Aus. I then followed them up with an email confirming everything, what car, when where etc. (in German and engrish). |

We just grabbed some Citeron when we were there last year. Make sure whatever you get you can take across borders. Some cars you can't take into Italy etc as you won't be covered by insurance.

Avis +1.
However when sailing in Europe for 4 to 6 months we used to have our cars leased for that period. Worked out much cheaper than rentals so of you're there for that long look into a short term lease as well. |

These guys are worth checking out if you are looking to rent a convertible in Germany. They specialise in the luxury car market, and have a great fleet of BMW convertibles and from my past experience are pretty flexible on one-way rentals and crossing borders - so you could pick it up in Amsterdam and drop it off at the end of your trip in Germany.

You going to take time to go on the Ring? If that is part of your plan (it should be!) then make sure your car is covered for this, as some cars specifically don't insure for this.

Make sure you get a travel insurance policy that covers hire car excess. More often than not it's cheaper to get full on travel insurance for the duration of your holiday than it is to reduce your excess on the rental itself. On the off chance you do have a claim you'll be up for the excess on your travel insurance policy ($0-$250) rather than the thousands on the rental

Autoeurope is a great site to use.
Basically gives you a corporate discount and uses most rental companies. Sixt is good too. Also ty start and finish in the same place to avoid one way fees. |
