2012 128i N51 rough idle a little struggle when pressing the gas....
Hello all.
This is my first time experiencing this. Service Engine Soon light is on. Also I noticed when I put the key in, “service engine” shows up at the start on the LED menu, then disappears. It started fine in the morning. It was parked for an hour, started her up, idle was regular. As soon as I pressed the gas, she did not feel normal and noticed her struggling for air. At stand still, again, rough idle, struggling to breathe. Taking her in to get her checked. Any ideas what this would be? No access to a code reader. Thanks |

Spark plugs need to be tightened/replaced or you're due for a fuel pump failure.
I've had both issues. In California, because it's an ultra low emissions engine, the warranty on the fuel pumps is extended to 120k miles. So mine was replaced for free with a 110k on the clock. |

My reading of the warranty is that the SULEV must be registered (they specifically use the word "registered" and not "purchased") in one of those states, but I think SULEVs not registered in those states still get pretty good warranty protection.

So I just changed plugs (all six) on my car about ~17XXX mi ago, and this morning I got a Cyl 6 misfire. Happened as I accelerated on the highway and really stepped on it. It shook like crazy. Had it cleared but it intermittently comes back. Is it possible that the coil went this time. Note that I only changed plugs before, not coils.
DIY/dumb question: Where is Cyl 6 and can I just swap it with another one to "check?" I don't think it's the plug but the coil itself. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks to this great community, I have learned a lot along the way of my ownership of my 128. |

So this is the closest one to the windshield correct? It should be easy as it doesn't require tools as the coils have plastic "snaps" correct? I feel dumb with these Qs but hey, a man has to start from somewhere.

Any advice on which one of these two is the one that is compatible to a 2012 128? All taken from ECS and both said compatible.

I don't know what the functional difference would be between those coils. I'd get the black ones. Thats what my car has as OEM. Also check fcpeuro.com

So i tried to swap coilpacks from 6 to 5. Still got the cyl6 misfire. Changed the plug, still got the same code. I gave up and brought it to my indy. Anything else beyond a coil or plug is out of my league, though I know it’s doable.
Edit: so I called my local dealer and they said that it “might “ be covered under the SULEV N51 warranty if found to be part of the fuel system or emissions system. My dilemma now is, I left it at my indy and it will be checked probably tomorrow and my dealer appointment is on Friday. Should I keep it my Indy for tomorrow and if he finds that it’s a fuel injector or something, just tell him don’t work on it as it’s covered at the dealer and then take it there Friday? Just wanted to figure out he best strategy here. Thanks for any advice mates! Last edited by $iriu$black; 03-28-2018 at 04:06 PM.. |
