I will be attempting this next week. I have the parts on order. They recently dropped the price on the required BT module; its now only $300+$15 for a bracket you need (vs. ~$675 previously). I will report back with my results.
The install is VERY DIY friendly: it should be as simple as attaching the bracket in the trunk with two screws, attaching the module to it, and plugging in the two connectors that are already there. |

Since I have the 6FL iPod/USB adapter, the MULF2 box is present in my trunk which appears to contain bluetooth functionality. I'd love to hear what other items might be required, assuming this control unit will work.

The problem appears to be that USA dealerships may not be able to provide coding in order for the MULF2 to be used for BT. From what I can tell, cars in the USA use the TCU because of the GPS and lo-jack functionality of BMW Assist (since Bluetooth and BMW Assist go hand-in-hand here in the USA).

I just called the nearest dealership to ask if it was possible to retrofit. They're gonna have to call me back... :P

Here is all of the info I have gathered, including part numbers, if someone else wants to try this out: Note: this case applies to cars that have Nav/I-Drive ONLY. Non-I-Drive cars do NOT appear to have the microphone and perhaps other parts and so likely require additional pieces. For I-Drive cars: You already have Voice Command, so you have the microphone and loudspeaker already. Further, it appears that the cars are pre-wired with the TWO antennas that should be required. As best as I can tell, the only parts that are not already in the car are the TCU (part #84109204343, $425 inluding $50 core charge from Tischer) and a new roof switch (part #61319180049 (beige interior) $266 from Tischer). Note: the roof switch MAY very well be optional. It houses the Assist/SOS button, but if you are not interested in Assist you MAY be able to get away with the existing roof switch. After that, by most accounts some coding will need to be performed on the TCU at your dealer. Depending on the competence of your dealer, this may take from 1-3 hours (or more) @ ~$100/hr. This is the killer for me. I'd hate to buy all these parts, bring my car in, and have some Tech waste six hours trying to program the thing. A few reports say this module SHOULD actually be plug-and-play, but I can't get a definitive answer. Evan at Tischer says it needs to be programmed, and he knows his stuff. Again, if someone is willing to try this I would be happy to relay a few other things I have guesses on, but for now I have cancelled my order for the TCU. I currently can't justify potentially up to $1k on BT functionality alone. |
