In case nobody noticed, the picture of the switches are upside down relative to each other. The white pieces are on the same side. I found it a little confusing at first.

DIY please. This will come in handy for the electronic toll both cameras. Although the fine is heavy.

So I took mine apart and everyting looks exactly like your picture, but you still need to fabricate a piece from the button to the contacts. The white pieces in your picture doesn't show that piece. You still need the Lego from what I can tell.

By the way, there are 4 tabs that need to be removed. Two are on the bottom, and two are on the top. I could only cut off the top left tab by removing the button. You can easily remove the button by pushing the tabs out with a small flat head screwdriver while you pull the button with your thumb nail. You can see where it catches because there are two square holes on the inside of the white part.

Update: This is for a 2010 135i (09/09) The fabricated piece needs to be exactly 1-1/4" long. The contact pad needs to be about 5/8" wide and 1" long, but I did trim this to fit. I did not use the bottom part of the Lego, but used a piece a plastic from a vinyl siding sample and drilled a 3/16" hole in it. The nob on the Lego fits into this hole perfectly. I put it all together and the tactile feel of the button is perfect. Oh and the fogs now work too.

Thanks Rikx1M

The mod works

Just did the mod. Great find OP.

I used this tutorial to remove the vent, much easier than Andy's instructions...

http://burgertuning.com/instructions...ge_install.pdf

Initially I had cutoff the 3 pins and the lights were working but I didn't like how hard I had to push the button, so I did a bit of research with the little tool that I have around the button in search of a 4th pin, and there it was in between the buttons on the other side, I had to push-pull the pin and everything works just like it should, smooth push for on and off...

I can confirm the 1M does not need the Lego part, it has everything needed just cut off the pins on the button.

Again, thanks for the idea, I was ready to buy the euro switch, you just saved me 135 bucks

Here's a photo of the 4th tab that you need to remove in order to make it a nice "button"

Question for the Europe guys

it used to be that rear fog was only left rear side; has this changed?

I don't think the law has changed...but the BMWs seem wired for left and right lights. This switch takes advantage of the adaptive brakes that have a brighter blast of light on hard, sudden braking. When the switch is engaged, both left and right lights illuminate, and believe me, in fog these really cut through the soupy fog and let people know you are there.

How do you remove the button to access that 4th tab?

I have 3 tabs cut off. It works, but I have to push it hard. Not smooth at all.

BTW, I did the top button as well. That's for the front fogs.
There's a light in the console that lights up, but unfortunately, there is no actual fog lights.
Any ideas on how to install front fogs without making the car look like rice?

Did this mod, but doesn't work. The white piece fits perfectly, and the button is actuating well. But no fogs, no light in the dash, no reaction from the car....

Go back to the OP... I think this will only work on US specification 1series that have the adaptive braking light feature where the brakes light up brighter when jamming on the brakes. That adaptive brake system lights up the main brake lights and also a second set of lamps When slamming on the breaks. Not sure why yours doesn't work...look in your light assembly, do you see three or more bulbs?

Got inspiration to do the mod to my 1M, and success!! Saved me a bunch of Euros. Took a while, but I took my time because I didn't want to break anything. I found that to properly remove all four stoppers, you have to pop the button out of the housing. Was a bit tricky. Maybe a bit more for me, as the plastic was cold.
One note if the mod doesn't work. The headlights have to be in position 1 or 3 for the rear fogs to come on. Confirmation is via the annunciation in the panel.
CM
Thanks again!!
