BMS Low Oil Temperature Thermostat

Hey Guys,

I had the chance to test the new low oil temp thermostat from Burger Motorsports the other day. The temp was 28 degrees and after 40 minutes of driving including many hard pulls my oil temp maxed at 110. I recently sold my 135i vert and bought a 09' 335i DCT (yes of course an N54) and noticed that this 335i runs a lot hotter than my old ZF box 135i. I was always seeing just under 120 degrees in this new car but now with the BMS thermostat the delay to 70 degrees is around 2-3 minutes but it takes a little longer to reach 100 and never goes past 110.

The install takes about 5 minutes and is a great little mod. This is not an alternative to an oil cooler upgrade in anyway and won't make much difference to those that like to track there car's regularly but it's a great way to manage your oil temps on a daily basis cause we all know these car's like to run hot.

Thanks JB. My order is on the way. Anything to keep turbos cooler in Qld. That's prompted me to get the clutch stop limiter from them, which I've been meaning to do.

My old 335i also used to run just below 120.

Anyone tried water wetter?

My car (no oil cooler or whatever) takes at least 7-8 minutes to get to 70degrees!

Yeh I think he is saying an ADDITIONAL 2-3 minutes, or 10 in total.

If I didn't have an oil cooler already, I would have gone down this route first. Imho, changing out to a low temp oil thermostat is the way to to go in reducing oil temp but it requires A LOT more patience as it takes a fair bit longer to warm up. Great mod for a great price.

As most of my trips are very short & I already have trouble getting heat into my oil, this mod isn't for me. It would be great to have a thermostat that I could bypass when I wanted to (track days etc), via a switch inside the cabin...

If the instal only takes 5 mins you could take it to the track, switch to it for the day and then put the standard one back in for daily use.

Hey, that's not a bad idea. Glad I thought of it.

Mind you, I haven't installed one yet so it may be a bad idea.

I'm not sure if this is best for track use, where the thermostat would be fully open anyway due to 120+ temps when you're on it. Here the temps are just governed by the efficiency of the cooler.

It'd be more suitable for longer stints on the hwy or around town. My oil temps sit around 109/110 under these conditions. As my OEM thermostat doesn't open until ~109 degrees there's little chance for my oil to get any cooler at the moment but it would with the thermostat removed. What we need is a replacement, lower temp or adjustable thermostat.

I knew it was a bad idea

I took my car out last night to run some logs with the JB4 to see what this DCT can do and after at least 10-12 wide open the throttle runs from 2nd-5th gear the oil wouldn't go past 110. The car was already warm when I took it out and temps were about 22 degrees. The other thing I noticed was after each WOT run the oil temp stayed the same whereas it would normally increase by 2-3 degrees by the end of the run.

I've been running around town most of the day today in 26 degrees and the oil has been between 100-110. I know this thermostat is working cause like I mentioned earlier this car would have been sitting on 120 most of today.

BTW: The DCT takes a little getting use to but it's a lot of fun. Makes the car feel weightless compared to my previous car.

Mine is in, took 2 minutes and didn't even get my hands dirty! Oil didn't go over 110

Why did Mr BMW put a thermostat there if not having one solved the oil heat issue. Given some thought, I would not do this mod.

It doesn't actually take much longer to hit 70 degrees, maybe 2 minutes however it does take longer to reach 100 or 105. I personally take it easy on the car until around 95 degrees anyway and as I'm sure most of you on here know that with most cars especially forced induction cars you need to get the oil up to or close to operating temps not only for the longevity of the motor but the turbos also.

An example is my car that loves to hang around on 120 (personally I think it's too hot) on a daily basis and the oil starts to lose it viscosity when it gets too hot, maybe not at 120 but everyday at 120 is not as good as 110 IMO.

I'd probably remove mine in the winter months anyway.
