I wish I could find it for that price especially looking at the great job they did. I attempted DIY walnut shell blasting this past Sunday but the Harbor Freight gun just clogged the entire tire. I was fully pissed off for about 5 hours and accomplished basically nothing. Now I have to go back this Sunday with a gun cleaning kit. I have 36K miles and mine are as dirty as all of the others I have seen.

All the more reason to join the club (for advice on service & problems) or stick with a traditional natually aspirated engine.
I wonder if cutting 1/2 the oil change interval would reduce this, certainly could not hurt.

Can anyone chime in on having an OCC and if it will help with this, Also if they wouldn't mind explaining why or pointing me in the right direction that would be awesome!

^ theoretically a OCC will help because the carbon build up on the intake values is the oil fumes being vented by the PCV which an OCC is supposed to capture. However i think OCC helps but does not solve the problem. In the long run you will likely need your values blasted eventually no matter what. The problem simply is that in a direct injection engine, there is no fuel flowing over the values to "wash them" and so grime will build up over time.

Yeah, but you still have to buy the equipment and since this is only needed every 45 - 50K miles I'm not sure it's worth it. Unless your doing it for your friends with DI engines. I just paid $500 to get this done at a local indy shop.

ABR on Kuykendahl in Spring does a GREAT job on all things BMW. They did my blast a year or so ago... Ask for Alex, you'll be glad you did.

He's calling the carbon build up dirt. The carbon on the back of the valves has nothing to with your injectors failing. These are to separate problems. Sorry Dackelone I thought it would add Anshk's question too. The second part was directed to him.

Finally, after I realize he does not know about N54problems I went to other shop and they cleaned intake and changed 3 injectors to new ones. But still I made 7kmiles with bad oil! |

Sorry to resurrect this thread a bit, but it was the right topic so I figured I'd just continue on...
I'm starting to notice some decreased throttle response/hesitation, so it sounds like some walnuts are in my future. I've seen the BavAuto DIY video and it doesn't look too bad if I'm bored on a Sat. Any recommendation on obtaining the parts for reasonable prices? As far as preventative steps, it seems the suggestion is to put in an oil catch can like the BMS one. BavAuto seems to suggest that these will greatly reduce/eliminate the carbon build-up. What's the real story there from experience? |
