Good idea, best to check if it really is plug and play :P. From reading that thread it seems like the angel eyes on the headlight would have to be wired in myself correct? I know nothing about wiring so im not sure if I should do it myself. I also found out that sonar=spyder headlights, so maybe their headlights arent so bad?

So back on topic if I were to do this conversion on my halogen car I would need...

1) Adaptive Xenon Headlights
2) Xenon DS1 Bulbs
3) Ballast Control Unit?
4) New FRM 3 (My vehicle is a 2009 128 - 09/09 production which I believe to be FRM 2?
5) Coding
6) Lots of time

Is this it?

Yup, and if your law requires - headlight washers.

add 7) 2 x H8 angel eye bulbs

8) Lots of money

also 2) is D1S xenons

BMW sells a Xenon retrofit kit which includes the wiring loom/harness and the ballasts in a kit. I found that was cheaper than buying 2 x bulbs/ballasts on their own lol..

Also for eyebrows tap off of the angel eye power. When I did mine there was no wiring diagram for the eyebrow out yet. Maybe there is now, not sure.

I used Bi-xenon not adaptive - go with Bi-xenon rather, adaptive (directional) xenon is too much hassle with extra motors etc.

Bi-xenon has 2halogen H8 for angel eyes and 2 D1S for xenon. That is the most simple setup.

I would not be able to help you with coding FRM3 as BMW did mine in the end for me but when they tried it I did need FRM3 as the lights would simply not fire up with the FRM2 when they tried.

Also intrument cluster software had to be updated etc.

Is the FRM3 definitely needed? The E90 guys seem to have luck with adding the xenon option to the VO and aren't changing the FRM module.

If you want a stock setup, a fresh FRM is required (not programmed/coded). The FRM in my 2/09 E82 would not accept the coding from NCS Expert. Keep in mind you will need to run new wires from the module to the headlights (coding changes the pin 'assignment' at the FRM). I can walk you through the conversion should you decide to go that route. The capacitors have worked out great (just need to be meticulous with the wiring).

So did you go with a new FRM module, or did you create some other workaround? I feel like we've talked about this before, but I can't recall!

New clean FRMs run $300? Plus the damn Xenon Ballast Computers - $250 - OEM wiring harness retrofit which includes bulbs ballasts ($200 each??) and not including the 6-8 hours of labor that seems to be how long it would take the dealer to do the retrofit (750$ labor)

@ AW128 - I used a capacitor to workaround the FRM (addresses the flicker issue with the xenons). Still get the high beam error at startup but can live with it (only lasts 10 seconds and drops down to a ! in the trip odometer).

@ Satalite - If you can live with the high beam error at startup a new FRM is not required. I spoke to the service manager at 3 different dealers, none of them were up to the retrofit (not authorized to perform the service was the phrasing I rec'd from them). The parts were just over $1k (euro bi-xenon housing w/bulbs and ballasts - $867, retrofit harness (had to source this from the UK, only needed 2 of the wires/pin contacts) - $100, capacitor w/housing - $25, and various electrical parts (9006 connectors, heat shrink tubing, etc) - $30. Did the labor myself, was a PITA (but worth it in the end).

Just wanted to share...was able to complete this upgrade!

A night shot of the headlight....

and the link of the install

Was glad to know that my FRM already was pre-wired so I didn't need the FRM3 that I bought with the bi-xenon headlights.

Need to take a day time shot to complete the photo story.

Since you already had HIDs from the factory, I'm not surprised a new FRM wasn't needed. I think the FRM3 is only needed when adding the OE HIDs to a car that came with halogen lights from the factory.

Switching the halogen high beam pin on the headlight socket wont work as when you code the $522 in NCS it no longer uses that wire. You would also need to move the pin at the FRM (just as with the DRL above) to the bi-xenon shutter pin for it to work.

Also, as I posted previously, if your car came from the factory with halogens, you cant recode your car to xenons. You need a new FRM.
Can you Please be more specific about moving drl pins on the frm?

Hmm, my car Halogen Hal, is of the same build date as the OP (with the required washer & rain sensor options as noted in the BMW install instructions) and am considering the same upgrade, just a couple of questions:

1) If done through dealer looks like they get upgraded to the (ALC) swivel action; non (ALC) swivel is DIY?

2) Do the rears have to be upgraded as well (I'm preLCI)?

Hey All,

I have a 2009 128i with halogen lights. I replaced them with Xenon OEM headlights.

I get a error message for High Beam, All other light functions are working as expected.

Seems like this thread has a lot of information about swapping Halogens with OEM Xenons, wondering if anyone of you managed to get it working with all functionality?

Any help is much appreciated!!

You need to tap the wire from pin 1 - DRL into whatever pin is for the eyebrow. As the pre-lci 135i's wiring harness would not have the pin for the eebrow, you would need to buy a pin socket and wire to suit.

Ok, I guess Ill buy a couple of each just to be sure. I know the eye brows are pin 7 in the headlight connector. So ill tap pin 1 to pin 7. That will give me voltage. I wonder if the housing shares the ground to everything. When I had my lights off the car, I put a battery across 6-7 and the leds lit up. Im hoping it is a shared ground.
