Jaymz, Dunno mate, I live in an apartment and the insurance premium is already going to be high due to the combo of 135 and my suburb so if an alarm combined with the immobiliser can reduce my premium, then I need to consider that but I know what you mean. I haven't had car alarms for years so it may be that I'll dump this option.

Phil, If you decide to get the alarm to reduce your insurance, you might consider waiting until you get it, get it as an accessory from a dealer, and DIY. That way, you will avoid paying stampduty and LCT on it. You'd have to compare the two costs. I don't think your insurance company will even ask, much less care.
There is a DIY with photos and instructions somewhere on 1Addicts, and it appears to be quite simple - even to a "Dubbo" like me. The car is largely pre-wired for it, so it's really a plug-n-play assembly job. Just a thought. Others may have already done it, and may like to comment. |

Cheers bfi2906, you're right that is an option and something to consider - will do some more research. Do you have an alarm fitted to your car?

Phil,
No I don't. I don't have a 1er - I have '04 3er. But I chose not to have an alarm as my car is garaged at home, and at work. So there's minimal risk. But to be honest, regardless of that, with the key systems and immobilisers on cars these days, particularly those as technically advacned as they put in BMW's, joy riding is less of an issue. And if the "badies" want your car THAT bad, they're going to put it on the back of a flat-bed, and drive it away with any alarm just blaring away. On tha basis, when I get around to ordering my 1er, I won't be putting an alarm on it - even though I think they're only a few hunderd as an accessory, and would probably be some fun to to the DIY. |
