Abrupt and shaky clutch engagement, strange shimmy / shake from engine

Hi addicts,

So my 08 128i has a strange syndrome when I lift my foot off of the clutch and the engagement is happening, it doesn't "hook up" immediately... rather, its seems like it slips or is slipping intermittently.

this happens until what seems to be, the car warming up. after that, it engages pretty normally.

there is also a "shimmy" kind of shake from the engine at idle in neutral, it'll do that and that be normal and smooth, and repeats this a bit sometimes, again, mostly when the car is cold.

now, two weeks ago after changing diff and tranny oil, my friend said that the guibo or flex disc i believe its called, is put on BACKWARDS and that its not in the best shape... he said thats the reason why the clutch engagement is what it was.

any thoughts??

Shouldn't effect the clutch engagement, but it's literally a vibration damper so that could be the cause of the shake.

clutch delay valve? Are you trying to burn rubber or just shift fast?

I believe the clutch delay valve was removed already. Not trying to burn rubber, just have the clutch hook up as usual for first gear. its as if the clutch slips, but then the clutch feels strong, and when warmed up, it hooks up...

You may be experiencing clutch "chatter" - when glazing or other contamination (uneven wear etc) of the clutch face happens due to various reasons including age.

Have you ever had the clutch changed? Any idea on mileage on the existing clutch?

Could simply be time to replace....

The clutch will get chattery. It doesn't mean it needs to be replaced. Especially as the springs wear out on the assembly it will make more and more noise. As long as it hooks up, don't worry.

Thanks guys, I was thinking along the lines of clutch glaze as you said or uneven wear, or possibly that my clutch is going out. has 114k on it and I dont think previous owner changed it.

Thats not to say it is. I think Ill do the 3rd gear test unless anyone else has a better suggestion (3rd gear from standstill, quickly lift off clutch pedal and engine should either stall or close to it with strong clutch)

am i correct?
